Well Media Day is here for Mountain West basketball and all the preseason picks and honors have been announced. Well the Pokes were picked eighth by the media and it's hard to argue that they should be ranked higher. Can Wyoming finish higher then eighth? Absolutely, but not every Wyoming fan thinks this team can do much.
It's probably just my inner Cubs fan speaking here but every off season always gives me a chance to let that optimism seep back into my system. I think Coach Schroyer brought in some nice recruits this year and the returning players have made some great strides. There will be more articles later on focusing on these improvements as we get closer to the season starting.
Do I think Wyoming will be contenders for a Mountain West title this year? Not this year but I think there is a great chance they could finish fifth or sixth which would be a solid improvement over last years 10-21 record and 3-13 finish in MWC play.
Full preseason poll and individual honors are listed after the jump.
First place votes are in parentheses. Pretty incredible that four teams earned a first place vote. All four teams are talented and will have a chance at the title.
1. San Diego State (21)
2. BYU (5)
3. New Mexico (3)
4. UNLV (1)
5. Colorado State
9. Air Force
San Diego State, BYU, New Mexico and UNLV are all clear cut ahead of the rest of the conference. Colorado State and Utah were a mixed bag last year and TCU, Wyoming and Air Force are trying to crawl away from the bottom of the conference.
G Jimmer Fredette, Sr. BYU
G Dairese Gary, Sr., New Mexico
G Tre’Von Willis, Sr., UNLV
F Kawhi Leonard, So., San Diego State
F Malcolm Thomas, Sr., San Diego State
Player of the Year: Jimmer Fredette, BYU
Newcomer of the Year: F Drew Gordon, Jr., New Mexico
Freshman of the Year, G Kyle Collinsworth, BYU
Not surprising that no Wyoming players are listed here. There is a chance that one of the JUCO players could grab the Newcomer of the Year award. Only one true freshman on the Cowboys roster (Joe Hudson) but sure how much playing time he will get with the depth at guard. G Desmar Jackson should have a great year and should consider some post season honors.
