Cowboys need just one game to complete 2011 football schedule

The Cornhuskers are already coming to Laramie next season. What other team will join them in the rare air?

The Wyomgin Cowboys just need one more game to complete their 2011 football schedule.  With the loss off Utah and BYU and the addition of Boise State the Mountain West will have just eight members in 2011. The Pokes will play seven conference games with four of those on the road: Boise State, San Diego State, Air Force and Colorado State.  The home games will be: New Mexico, TCU and UNLV.

According to FBschedules.com the Pokes already have four out of conference games scheduled:

  • 9/3 vs Weber State
  • 9/17 @ Bowling Green
  • 9/24 vs Nebraska
  • 10/8 @ Utah State

So a fifth game is needed and a it better be a home game otherwise the Pokes would play five at home and seven on the road.  The Pokes originally scheduled a 9/10 game at Boise State as part of a home and home match up.  That game is now a conference game and could be moved back later in the year or stay the same date.

If the Boise game stays put with the 9/10 date then 10/11 would be ideal date for the game or it could be after the 10//8 game with Utah State.  Right now the non conference schedule sets up pretty nicely for Wyoming with three winnable games and then one challenging match up with Nebraska.  So the big question here is what kind of team do you want the Pokes to fill that void in the schedule with?

After playing Boise and Texas this year I think most Cowboy followers are hoping for a break from the gauntlet.  Let's take a look at what some of the possibilities could be for that last opponent.

Fresno State and Nevada are both in need of games after finding out that they are stuck in the WAC till 2012.  Do we get a rivalry started with one of those teams a year early?

All the Big 10, Big 12 and SEC teams have their schedules already locked up for next year.  The PAC 10 has just a few open slots left.

Here a few options for that last remaining game:

  • Look West:  PAC 10 team perhaps?Cal and USC are still looking for games.
  • Play another mid level team from the MAC or Sun Belt?
  • Try a Big East or ACC Opponent?  Rutgers, Syracuse and North Carolina all need games.
  • Play another FCS school?  Scheduling two FCS schools is looked down upon and would require seven wins to become bowl eligible.

Vote in the poll and voice your opinion below.  The Pokes have a great shot at going 3-1 in the current non conference lineup, I would love for them to make it 4-1 by scheduling another mid level school from the Sun Belt.  We already play a WAC and a MAC team this year.  I'm also willing to put another year off before we play Nevada and Fresno State.
