Mountain West Conference Standings
Well quite the finish to the regular season for most teams. There was plenty of surprises and drama as well as some expected results. Time for all the bowl game ordeal to try and get worked out over the next week. Always fun to project where each team is headed. Could be quite a few schools playing in different bowls this year due to records and other conferences poor play. Let's take a look see and find out all that happened around the Mountain West.
Air Force: After a embarrassing loss to Division 3 Colorado College the Falcons have bounced back with two straight wins over two actual D1 opponents. How does that work? Their 3-1 record is deceiving so expect a few more losses this week. Which bowl game will the Zoomies play in this year? My hunch says the Independence Bowl but we'll have to see.
BYU: The Cougars lost to the Utes in the Holy War and of course TOTAL DRAMA breaks out. Ute fans said this, this happened to poor Bronco, that fumble never happened. This rivalry is full of pettiness and I'm kinda glad Mountain West fans won't have to deal with all that nastiness in the future. It gets really tiring to hear and read about this and I don't even live in Utah.
Colorado State: Coach Fairchild is staying put as head coach and Ram fans are mad. In Hoops action they've only played three games and are sitting at 2-1 after a loss to Sam Houston State. The Missouri Valley - Mountain West Challenge kicks off this week and the Drake Bulldogs will give the Rams a big test.
New Mexico: The Lobos actually put up a nice fight there in the first half against TCU with 17 points. Every Boise State fan was rooting for them but it could only do so much good. In the second half reality set in and the Horned Frogs went onto dominate 66-17. Mike Locksley will be around for a third year but the school simply can't afford to pay another coach who isn't employed there any longer. They are already paying Rocky Long and don't want to pay Locksley and a new coach. This should be entertaining!
San Diego State: Aztec Hoops are 6-0 and ranked #18 in the nation. Very solid start to the year. The Poinsettia Bowl still hasn't officially invited the Aztecs yet but this has been could have been set in stone for almost a month. The big question now is will Brady Hoke still be the head coach for that bowl game? He has been talking to Minnesota and may be considered for other openings as well.
TCU: Will the Horned Frogs be smelling Roses on January 1st? Looks that way but we'll wait for the official announcement. Wisconsin is the likely foe which is too bad since it would be great for TCU to embarrass Ohio State and represent for all the "Little Sisters of the Poor". Boise losing was exactly what the Horned Frogs needed.
UNLV: Coach Hauck is looking for that 11th loss when the Rebels travel to Hawaii. Think of it as the Hawaii Bowl except a few weeks earlier and there is no notoriety. In Hoops the Rebels are currently not ranked but are making a case that they should be. Currently sitting at 6-0 and just won the 76 Classic Tourney over Virginia Tech.
Utah: After two tough losses the Utes have had some amazing fourth quarter comebacks the last two weeks. A 10-2 record could very easily be 8-4. With the big move to the PAC 12 next year there is a little more doubt now about how competitive they will be. I would except Utah to make a Las Vegas Bowl appearance this year.
Wyoming: The trip to Cancun for the Cancun Challenge was challenging and resulted in losses to Missouri and Providence. Most Poke don't really care since they just keep remembering the Border War.
Future Members of the Mountain West
Boise State: Kyle Brotzman is not the toast of the town in Boise but he is in Reno. One of the most dramatic games this year and the Broncos let one get away. This one loss cost the WAC and the Broncos millions of dollars. Guess Karl Benson won't be getting that big raise he was hoping for this year. Still one more game against Utah State to go.
Fresno State: The Bulldogs crushed the hopes and dreams of the Idaho Vandals by destroying their bowl aspirations. Next they hope to make it two wins in a row over Illinois. Last year they won a crazy game 53-52. I would expect Fresno to finish 8-4 and then lose in a bowl game. That is their special magic trick they do every year.
Hawaii: The Warriors snuck back into the rankings and make their entry at #25. The 13th and final regular season game is this weekend against UNLV. After that then it is time for the Hawaii Bowl on December 24th, one of my favorite bowls.
Nevada: Biggest win in Wolf Pack history happened on Friday Night. Very big plays on offense and defense during the second half to mount the come back. The move jumped them up to #14 and there is a chance they could move even higher with a win over Louisiana Tech. This could be a huge turning point for the program. hopefully it will draw more fans to the stadium and help recruiting.
