Big recruiting weekend lands Wyoming five commitments

Well it was a great week of recruiting that finished with a bang when five recruits gave verbal commitments to Wyoming after visiting.  All of a sudden the Cowboys have 17 verbal commitments for 2011 and the class is really starting to take shape.  Here are the most recent additions to the Wyoming recruiting class: QB Brett Smith, OL Rafe Kiely, OL Zach Rushing, WR Dominic Ruffran, DB Luke Anderson.

Smith and Kiely are both ranked two stars by Rivals.  While the other three players are all currently unranked.  Poke fans had been waiting for a recruit on the offensive line and their prayers were answered.  Except Wyoming to sign up to three more linemen for this class.

We're lucky enough to have found video on all of these athletes so below each video we'll have some information on each one.  There may be a couple more recruits that decide over the next week and then I would expect things to die down for Christmas and New Years.

Brett Smith - QB. Salem, Oregon. 6'2 190lbs

Smith is the second QB to commit to Wyoming this week and should be the final one for this class.  He originally committed to San Jose State and then changed his mind after the WAC started losing members,  Watching his video he reminds me quite a bit of Austyn Carta-Samuelswho also decommited from SJSU before coming to Wyoming.  Smith is a duel threat QB like ACS and has a similar build.  I noticed that Smith that he has a little hop in his throwing motion.  Just needs to work on keeping his feet planted which should help the distance on his throws as well.  Smith should be enrolling in January and have a chance to practice during the spring which should give him a leg up in the fight for the #2 QB spot.

Highlights of the other four commits after the jump.

Rafe Kiely - OL Wheaton, IL 6'2 290lbs

Looks like a solid linemen with great size.  Depth on the offensive line was an issue last year for Wyoming last year.  That should be case with the four freshman that red shirt last year and players like Kiely coming on board.  It would be helpful if they would point out where he was on each play when you see #67 he is usally laying down a great block.  Kiely decided on Wyoming instead of Army who was also heavily recruiting him,

Dominic Rufran - WR/RB Colorado Springs, CO 6'0 180lbs

Quite an athlete he lined up as a wideout, running back and even ran the wildcat for Palmer HS out of the Springs.  Has quite the highlight video where he reverses direction on the field several times for big plays.  That may be harder to do in college where the defense will closer to his speed.  Still very excited to see what he can do as a wideout for the Pokes. Colorado was also recruiting Rufran this year.

 Luke Anderson - S. Blinn Junior College. 5'11 195

Luke Anderson likes to hit people... a lot.  The very fast safety (4.3 in the 40) out of JUCO powerhouse Blinn College in Texas looks impressive.  You know who else played for Blinn?  Some guy named Cameron Newton, perhaps you've heard of him?  Anderson will have three years to play two years and will be able to enroll in December.   Though he isn't currently ranked I think he would gain a three star rating when evaluated.

Zach Rushing - OL Gulf Coast Community College. 6'4 295

Rushing looks like a big fella in his highlight video and does a nice job on picking up blocks.  He isn't currently ranked but I'm not concerned about that.  Hopefully he can adjust the warm climate in Mississippi to the wind and cold of Laramie without too much trouble.  His team went 10-2 this last season and he will enroll in August.
