Laramie, WY – The Wyoming Cowboys wrestling team gave the Cornhuskers all they could handle Saturday night at the UniWyo Sports Complex but in the end they came up short falling to Nebraska 20-12.
The Pokes won four of their matches and Joe LeBlanc who is ranked number 2 nationally came back against No. 10 ranked Josh Ihnen to win a 5-3 decision. LeBlanc fell behind Ihnene early 0-2 before escaping twice in the second period to even the score up at 2-2. Ihnen went up 3-2 but gave LeBlanc a point when he was penalized for stalling, sending the match into sudden death where 29 seconds in LeBlanc to get takedown and win the match for the Cowboys. The win was the first of the season for LeBlanc
"If we don't pull that match out, I don't know ... that would've put a cap on a horrible night," head coach Mark Branch said of the LeBlanc match. "That kid's tough, no doubt about it. We knew he was tough. He's wrestled Joe twice ... They've all been tough matches. (LeBlanc) fought back hard. He's only been wrestling for two weeks ... Obviously, I'm glad he got the job done."
The Cowboys also won matches at the 125-pound weight class when Tyler Cox won a 6-5 decision over David Klingsheim. The winning continued at the 149-pound and 157-pound weight class.
In the 149-pound match Cole Dallaserra won 5-1 over Ross Grande, while at 157-pounds Shane Onufer won a decision victory 4-2 over Tyler Koehn.
The one match that The Pokes thought they could win and did not was at the 133-pound class, 16th ranked Michael Martinez loss a 3-1 decision in the extra period to Ridge Kiley.
The Cowboys will be back in action on December 16th in Casper, WY when they take on the Oregon State Beavers.
