This was supposed to be an exciting trip where the Wyoming Cowboys (8-8,1-1) could build off their last second victory over New Mexico. Now it turns out that the Pokes will only have eight players available to play tonight when take on TCU (9-8,0-2).
Word came out last night JayDee Luster (hip pointer) and Djibril Thiam (turf toe) did not make the trip due to their injuries. In even worse news it looks former MWC Freshman of the Year Afam Muojeke will miss the remainder of this season after re-injuring the knee that he had surgery on last year. He is expect to have surgery next week and there is no timetable for his return.
So this leaves the Pokes without their starting PG and PF and veteran leadership. The one good bit of news is that Adam Waddell seemed to recover well after his breakout performance against New Mexico. It was really the first time all year that Waddell looked like himself after dealing with Achilles issues for the last 10 months.
One thing do we know is that this should mean plenty of playing time for Daylen Harrison and Brian Gibson tonight. Harrison is coming off the best of his career and it would be great for him to build off that momentum. Gibson is a rebounding machine but is only seeing nine minutes per game due to foul struggles.
Not sure what Coach Schroyer will do at PG with Luster out. Desmar Jackson has seen his scoring explode recently and he plays much better when not playing the point. Arthur Bouedo can play some point guard but you don't really want handling the ball 30 minutes a game. There is freshman Joe Hudson but is untested and hasn't played in the last four games. So we end up with Jackson running the show simply out of desperation.
The Horned Frogs are playing much stronger this year then expected. They've never been a powerhouse but this season they've had some nice wins over larger programs like USC and Texas Tech. As of late they have struggled and have now lost four straight. PG Ronnie Moss is as inconsistent as ever, he leads the team in minutes and points (14.5) but is shooting below 40% from the field. Sophomore forward Garlon Green has shown some improvement in his second year.
An interesting match up will be Francisco Cruz and J.R. Cadot who played against each other in the JUCO ranks. Cadot attended school at Sheridan College and has been a starter who is averaging 8 points 6 rebounds and shooting a whopping 67%. Cruz is averaging 8 points a game so far for the Pokes and is the teams leading three point shooter.
Keys for the Cowboys
- Get to the line. The Pokes need to be aggressive with the ball and get to the foul line. Hitting 70% or more of their FT's will be vital.
- Stay healthy and out foul trouble. There is hardly any depth at this point so Waddell needs to not get injured and no stupid fouls for the rest of the team.
- Imagine you're playing in Laramie. The Pokes have yet to win on the road so maybe they need a hypnotist to tell them that they aren't actually in Texas.
