Laramie, WY – The Wyoming Cowboys (8-8 1-1 MWC) upset the New Mexico Lobos (12-4 0-1 MWC) at the Arena Auditorium Saturday 67-66 as Francisco Cruz hit what some would call a miracle shot as time expired.
The Cowboys controlled the pace of the game as the Lobos never could take a huge lead as every time they did Wyoming would make a run and get right back into it.
New Mexico took the first lead of the game as A.J. Hardeman put them up 2-0 with less than two minutes gone in the game. The Pokes answered quickly as Desmar Jackson opened the scoring for the Cowboys hitting a 3 putting the Cowboys up 3-2.
Jackson scored 15 in the game breaking a streak of four straight games where he had scored 20 or more. Adam Waddell scored a season high 16 points but Daylen Harrison led the Cowboys in scoring with 17.
Wyoming led by as 7 in with about 8:30 minutes left in the first half but the Lobos clawed their way back into it. Going into the half the Lobos were down by just 1, 35-34.
The Lobos, who were led in scoring by Dairese Gary who had a game high and season best 24 points, came out in the second half and opened up a four point lead but that was their largest lead of the game.
The Pokes kept it close and when the baskets counted the just outplayed the Lobos.
The Lobos Alex Kirk hit a three from downtown with 57 seconds left in the game tied up the score at 64.
Wyoming’s Desmar Jackson hit one of two free throws after he was fouled while outwrestling two Lobos for the ball putting the Cowboy’s up 65-64.
The Lobo’s Gary then hit two free throws to put New Mexico up 66-65 with 24 seconds left in the game. The Cowboys brought the ball down court holding for the last shot.
With 7 seconds left Cruz missed a jumper that the Cowboys Daylen Harrison rebounded but missed a shot of his own. As the ball came off the rim at Cruz he put his hands on it putting the game winning shot up as time expired and Wyoming won 67-66.
The refs went to the replay of Cruz’s shot to make sure the basket was good, the Cowboys players knew it was the and the piled onto Cruz as the celebrated their biggest win in the 2010-2011 season.
Wyoming’s next game is Wednesday. They will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to take on the Horned Frogs of TCU. The game is set to tip at 5:30 p.m. mountain time.
