Wyoming Needs To Recruit Defensive Tackles Now To Prepare for 2013

Having a large group of seniors hasn't been a huge issue for Wyoming since Coach Christensen took over. The youth movement has been in full effect but now those younger players are veterans and that will certainly be shown next year at defensive tackle next year. The only defensive tackle currently on the roster that will still have eligibility in 2013 is current sophomore Patrick Merterns who is redshirting this year and will be a senior for the 2013 season.

Here is the list of every scholarship defensive tackle currently listed on the Cowboys roster:

Ben Durbin Junior
Patrick Mertens Sophomore(RS)
Miraldo Michel Junior
Mike Purcell Junior
B.J. Sumter Junior
Kurt Taufa'asua Junior

For the 2012 season five of these players will be seniors which will provide a great veteran presence in the middle. That will leave a big gap in 2013 with only Patrick Mertens left on the roster. To get ready now Wyoming certainly needs to land some defensive tackles in this recruiting class to make sure the cupboard isn't empty down the road.

Since the lower ranks are bare of any freshmen or sophomore defensive tackles (besides Mertens) I would hope for the Cowboys to try and recruit four tackles with this class: two junior college players and two high school seniors. With the junior college players they could recruit shirt them in 2012 and then have two years to play when everyone else graduated. That is what the Pokes did with Sumter and Taufa'asua. Then the two freshmen could also redshirt and have a year to add size and strength to get ready for 2013.

Wyoming only had one defensive tackle in last years class (Michel) and he was orginally listed as a defensive end. They did have one high school defensive tackle commit but he later ended up going to Tulsa which is his hometown.

Browsing through Rivals list of uncommitted defensive tackles none currently show offers from Wyoming. The Cowboys have done a solid job of recruiting of recruiting defensive ends but not had as much luck with tackles. Tyler Strong was a great DT from the 2010 class and played as a true freshmen but he was moved to guard to help out the offensive line and he has done a nice job there.

If Wyoming were to go after a defensive tackle from a JUCO they've previously recruited there are some options there.

Ken Bishop is a three star DT from Ellsworth CC. He currently lists offers from Northern Illinois and Kansas.

Ken Smith is another star DT from Blinn CC. He holds offers from Ohio and Marshall.

Snow College has a couple of tackles listed but they aren't rated and don't have any offers yet. A.J. Pataialii is 6-3 225 and Devin Filipe is 6-2 280lbs.

None of the these athletes currently have offers from Wyoming but Christensen and his staff have certainly shown that they will build connections with schools and recruit players from one area heavily. Here are some video highlights of some these guys to help you kill some time.
