Walk-on PG Jack Bentz Joins Wyoming

When the newest members of the Wyoming basketball arrived in Laramie a couple weeks ago there was a brief mention of a walk-on joining the team.  No one knew anything about the player: no name, no position... nothing.  Finally his identity has been revealed to the world.  Kind of surprising that we are so excited a player walking-on but  any news like this is good news.

The latest addition to the Wyoming basketball team is six foot tall Jack Bentz a PG out of Cleveland, OH.  He played for the University School and Bentz averaged 17 points and six assists last year.  The person who found out that Bentz was the newest Poke was Gary Striewski of KWGN TV who sat down with him for an interview.

There were actually two big connections that helped Bentz land at Wyoming.  His prep coach has a solid relationship with Coach Shyatt who has Ohio roots.  Bentz also played on the same AAU team as Wyoming freshman SF Larry Nance Jr.  That second part is a very big positive in my eyes.  Both players have chemistry on the court while playing AAU ball and it will also help to have a familiar friend on campus as they adjust to college life.

Interesting that Wyoming decided to beef up the point guard position after adding JC player Derrious Gilmore and freshman Riley Grabau in the most recent recruiting class.  No way to know now how much playing time Bentz may see this year but he will be hungry and I'm sure will push those around him in practice.

Wyoming does have one scholarship available with the recent loss of backup guard Joe Hudson.  It certainly appears like the Pokes are set at the point now.  Most likely Wyoming will use that scholarship to find a junior college shooting guard or center which are both thin spots right now.
