July 8, 2011 LARAMIE, Wyo. - Former UW sprinter Afiya Walker will compete in an international track competition in an attempt to qualify for the 2011 World Championships. Walker, a senior on this year's UW squad, will be a part of the 4-by-400-meter relay team for Trinidad and Tobago in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships. Walker is a native of St. Augustine, Trinidad. The event, hosted by Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, is organized by the Central American and Caribbean Athletic Confederation (CACAC). Only athletes representing a member nation of the confederation are allowed to compete in the biannual event. This year's edition runs from July 15-17 and serves as a qualifier for the 2011 World Championships. Walker graduated this year but currently is on UW's top-10 all-time list in seven events in both indoor and outdoor track. She owns Wyoming's second-fastest time in the 400-meter dash in outdoor track, 52.93 seconds. Last year, Walker took part in the NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean) Under 23 Championships in Miramar, Fla., finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash.
