Wyoming may on the verge of having a quarterback transfer and join the team instead of leave the program for once. Peter Fleischer a journalist who lives in Columbus, MO and has connections within Mizzou says QB Tyler Gabbert is very close to becoming a Wyoming Cowboy. Gabbert left Mizzou in May and eventually ended up transferring to Louisville. He was only in Louisville for a week before deciding he wanted to play elsewhere.
Wyoming recruited Gabbert back in 2009 which was back when Dave Christensen was entering his first season in Laramie. Prior to that Christensen coached Tyler's big brother Blaine Gabbert for a year at Mizzou. I actually suggested three months ago that Wyoming could be a destination for Gabbert due his familiarity of the offense and the relationship with Christensen.
Due to transfer rules Gabbert will have to sit out the 2011 season if he lands at a FBS school. Though he wouldn't effect the QB battle this year, it would create an interesting situation in 2012. Rumors of Gabbert having interest in Wyoming surfaced on message boards in July.
Right now Wyoming hasn't officially named a starter for the 2011 season and we don't know how the winner will perform. The top two candidates are true freshman and the third is a sophomore. Gabbert would be a redshirt sophomore in 2012 so it could be another situation of young players battling it out next year.
Landing Gabbert would be a be a big boost for the Wyoming depth chart. Out of high school he was a four star recruit and rated the 17th best pro-style quarterback. While at Mizzou he learned the same spread offense that the Pokes utilize.
