If you drafted a Wyoming running back in your college football fantasy draft he may not put up huge numbers this this week. Wyoming released their week one depth chart this afternoon and there were several surprises. At running back Brandon Miller was put ahead of Alvester Alexander. It was published in this format:
1. Brandon Miller
2. Alvester Alexander
One his weekly conference call Coach Christensen insisted that is not the correct way to order the running backs. Each back will actually receive equal rep and there is not a true #1 running back. So it should be read like this instead:
1. Brandon Miller OR Alvester Alexander OR Ghaali Muhammad
Kody Sutton is the only back who isn't quite ready to play in the opener, he could still certainly play later in the season. Here is the entire Week One Wyoming Cowboy depth chart if you want to check it out.
The other big news was a trio of suspensions that were handed out due to a violation of team rules.
"The young men in our program know that we have standards in place that they must follow," said Christensen. "When they don’t meet these standards they understand that there are consequences for their actions."
Safety Eric Mitchell and Tight End T.J. Smith will miss the season opener while safety Kenny Browder is suspended indefinitely. Browder was expected to start at safety after a strong spring. He played well as a freshmen then lost his focus and had a sophomore slump last year. It seems like it is an annual tradition for several players to be suspended for week one. With a long off season there is plenty of time for players to break team rules.
Luke Anderson will take over at strong safety for Browder and Andrew Meredith will be his backup since Mitchell will also sit out. Anderson also earned kickoff returner duties along with freshmen Dominic Ruffran.
The defensive line lists Korey Jones at right end and Gabe Knapton as a tackle. I wouldn't say that is set in stone as Jones is a hybrid end and linebacker and will essentially move between the two all game long. Knapton will still some time playing on the edge.
Zach Rushing won the starting job at right guard while Brandon Self beat out Tyler Strong at left guard. Josh Leonard took back the starting left tackle spot from Kyle Magnuson after losing it in the spring. Expect heavy rotation at all three of those spots as Wyoming finally has some depth on the line.
