Panel Of Pokes: The Orange And Blues

Brian Losness-US PRESSWIRE

Our panel tries to predict the outcome and top performers of the Wyoming and Boise State game this week.

This is a picture of Bronco tight end Gabe Linehan and his massive mullet. He has obviously put a lot of effort into grooming that monster.

Here are the updated standings for the Pick Em Contest. Three folks tied for the lead at 43 points.

Poke Pick: WR Chris McNeill

Final Score: Boise State 34 Wyoming 21

How will the Cowboys respond to adversity this week? Can they use it to movitate themselves to another level versus a talented team with a physical defense. The key for an upset will be doing a better job on both sides of the lines, while running the ball and stopping the run.

It will be a challenge against a Boise State team that does both well. The Pokes will need Brett Smith to be in the zone, which was not the case last week versus Fresno State. Finding critical turnovers and a few breaks will also help the Cowboys chances.

My Poke Pick this week is probably going to change. I'm having a hard time settling on a pick this week. I think I'm going to have to probably take DJ May this week. The Pokes are due for another breakout game of the rushing attack. The Pokes had a nice day rushing against Nevada and they need another against Boise if they're going to have a chance in this game. The freshman duo of Wick and May are going to be a legitimate rushing attack in future seasons and it'd be nice if we could see a breakout game from them this week. The Bronco defense is stiff but I think they can get some traction on the ground. Hopefully they'll be able to get the rushing attack opened up enough to free the passing attack and spring loose Rufran, Miller, and McNeill.

The Cowboys are coming off of another tough loss this week against a pretty good Fresno State team. Fresno put the boots to the Pokes early and often, but the team kept fighting to the end by putting in two second half scores when the game was already decided. Brett Smith and Jason Thompson rotated snaps throughout the game to get Thompson some snaps. The Cowboys will face a much tougher test this week as they will play host to Boise State on Cancer Awareness day. Boise State comes in ranked 21st in the country. The Broncos have been playing some pretty stout defense this season, but have been far less flashy than in years past as they are replacing one of their greatest quarterbacks of all time in Kellen Moore. The Broncos' biggest playmaker, Matt Miller, has been great this season with 357 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. The Pokes offense has been great at times this year, and not so great at times. They will be looking to find a little consistency this week against a salty Bronco defense. It's expected that Brett Smith will again be on the field for this game but it's unknown if he'll be sharing snaps with Thompson. The rushing attack failed to get much traction last week against Fresno and this week they'll be facing a much tougher defense. I think the Pokes have a shot at winning, not a great shot, but a shot nonetheless. I'm going to be a homer this week and pick the Pokes, 31-30.

The Pokes are playing for pride at this point as a bowl game is now out of the question. They can still hang with teams like Boise and have been on the cusp of victory many times this year to have it slip through their hands. Boise State does not look like the Boise of the last few years, as they've traded the high powered offense for the defense. Joe Southwick is definitely not Kellen Moore and DJ Harper is definitely not Doug Martin. From the sounds of things across the Twitterverse there has been some snow in Laramie this week.. it seems like the worse the weather the better chance the Pokes have. Hopefully the crowd will thrive in some bad weather and give the Pokes a lift when they need it. The Pokes will be without coach Dave Christensen this week as he's serving a one game suspension for his comments towards Troy Calhoun two weeks ago. Assistant head coach/offensive line coach Pete Kaligis will be coaching the team from the sidelines this week. This is a chance for the Pokes to send the Broncos out of the MW with a loss but it's going to take some work. Go Pokes!

Pokes Pick: Mike Purcell

The defensive line is going to step up and stop the Boise running game. D.J. Harper and Jay Ajayi present a pair of powerful runners that will attempt to roll over Wyoming. Purcell needs to help lead the d-line to attack and stop the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage. Stopping the Broncos from converting on third and short will be crucial for Wyoming to stay in the game.

Final Score: Boise State 27 Wyoming 10

The stats are not in the Pokes favor this weekend. It's hard to imagine the Cowboys offense having much success against one of the top defenses in the country. Perhaps with that all has gone wrong for the Pokes the last few weeks we'll see a renewed team on the field. Perhaps the team has found something to rally around this week and will turn some heads. There is no way to count on that happening and that is why I'm not predicting a close game.
