Plenty of injury news and other updates for the Pokes this week.
The most interesting news came out at the beginning of the week when we learned that two players were no longer with the team. Running back Kody Sutton and defensive back Kenny Browder were both dismissed from the team. Sutton is in his sophomore year and had been redshirting this year. He left the team briefly in August due to a health issue in his family but later returned. Sutton has been granted his release and will transfer.
Browder is a senior and had appeared in six games this year. After playing in the first six games of the season Browder missed the Fresno State and Boise State games. He had five total tackles on the year. The Cowboy depth in the secondary was already paper thin before losing Browder. You'll see the results of that in the depth chart.
In sad news senior defensive tackle Kurt Taufa'asau injured his knee in practice this week, it is severe enough that he will miss the rest of the year. It was just a routine practice and the knee just went out. Not a freak injury or anything. His knee won't require surgery but it will be a long recovery. Kurt and Mike Purcell had provided one of the best duo of defensive tackles in the Mountain West. Because it so late in the season Taufa'asua is not eligible for a medical redshirt and his career at UW is done. Very tough way for anyone to end their season and/or career. Patrick Mertens and B.J. Sumter will try and fill in for him. Wyoming only has three healthy defensive tackles on the roster now. The others are redshirting and you would hate to burn a year of eligibility so late in the year.
Luke Ruff will miss his fourth straight game. Very tough to see a senior captain miss his his final Border War,
Running back D.J. May was hurt in the Boise State game. He was listed as day-to-day earlier in the week. On Monday and Tuesday he wore a walking boot at practice. On Wednesday May was bootless and took some reps. Shaun Wick will get the start if May is not able to go.
Right tackle Kyle Magnuson is healthy this week and will start again at right tackle. Magnuson was injured against Fresno State and missed the game last week.
Darrenn White is listed as the starter at free safety. Due to the number of injuries in the secondary he is also listed as the backup corner for Blair Burns. That is the first time I've ever seen Wyoming list someone on the depth chart at two related positions. Luke Anderson is #2 at free safety. DeAndre Jones is the backup for Marqueston Huff at the second corner spot. Really can't afford to lose anyone else in the secondary this week.
The biggest hit this week is certainly losing Big Kurt. Wyoming needs to focus on stopping the Rams running attack and force freshmen quarterback Conner Smith to try to gain yards through the air. Ram quarterbacks have been sacked 25 times this year. Time to add to that number.
