The former Vandals head coach is considered one of the finalists for the position.
Coach Christensen was planning on keeping his coaching staff intact for 2013. He may be forced to find a new defensive coordinator if Chris Tormey aced his interview in Moscow today. Tormey interviewed Tuesday with Idaho AD Rob Spear. Tormey was formerly the head coach of the Vandals from 1995-99 where he led them to a 33-23 record and their first FBS bowl appearance.
Tormey also attended Idaho where he played linebacker and graduated in 1978. Obviously he has plenty of roots in Moscow and has had success at a school where winning has been rare. Other strong candidates are San Jose State OC Brian Lindgren and Washington State linebacker coach Jeff Choate.
Tormey has received plenty of criticism this year from Wyoming fans and media. In his first year in Laramie the results were not impressive. In most categories the defense had it's worst performance in the Christensen era.
- Points Allowed: 33.4
- Yards Allowed: 469
- 3rd Down Conversions Allowed: 50.82%
- 4th Down Conversions Allowed: 66.67%
Most of these figures were at or near the bottom of the Mountain West.
While many fans were calling for Tormey to be fired early in the season, I would not excited that he left. I'm sure I'm in the minority here and that is fine.
We gave Marty English three years and the defense steadily regressed. Not certain how Tormey could reverse that trend in one year. He also was never playing with his unit at full strength this year. Brett Smith was the biggest name injury of the year but the defense suffered several major injuries this year at every position. Starting MLB Devyn Harris was injured in the season opener against Texas. Starting safety and leader of the secondary Luke Ruff missed the last seven games. LB Oliver Schober only played in four games. Starting DT Kurt Taufa'asua missed a total of five games.
This was by far the most injury plagued season for the Pokes since DC took over.
Schematically I would say the defense was in the position to make the play a large majority of the time. Missed tackles allowed plenty of yards after contact. There were very few plays where the Wyoming defense was completely out of position. Under English the defense gave up plenty of big plays where they were caught completely in a wrong scheme.
Tormey is also a great recruiter and brought in several great commits after joining last year. I would like to give him a chance to bring in some more players that he likes for his system. If he ends up at Idaho then he will then be in a position where he is talking to Wyoming recruits one day and then convincing them to come to Moscow instead.
Idaho is expected to make a decision in a week to ten days. We should find out what the future holds for Wyoming and the Vandals soon.
