Even though Boise State will not be a member of the Mountain West in 2013, fans may still find themselves making a trip to the blue turf next December. With the demise of the WAC the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl that is played in Boise, ID was looking for a new conference partner. The MAC is the other conference already affiliated with the Idaho Potato Bowl.
Yesterday it was formally announced that the Mountain West had agreed to become a bowl partner with Idaho Potato Bowl effective next year.
Mountain West will be affiliated with Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2013. Game will have No. 6 pick from MW against No. 3 pick from MAC— Brian Murphy (@murphsturph) December 14, 2012
Next season the Mountain West will have 10 members and six bowl affiliations. Only five Mountain West teams were bowl eligible in 2012. A matchup with a MAC team should at least mean there will be plenty of points scored. However watching a game on the blue turf is not exactly relaxing on the eyes.
There is certainly not a huge payday linked with a trip to Boise in December. The Idaho Potato Bowl has the lowest bowl payout of any bowl game at just $325,000 per team. Regionally this is a good bowl travel wise for most of the Mountain West schools. The city of Boise does a nice job with promoting the game locally. Still I'm not a fan of cold weather bowl destinations.
With conference realignment it is hard to tell what the Mountain West will look like over the next few years. If further expansion happens and the Mountain West adds extra teams they will be in good shape bowl wise for the time being. Good to know that there is little chance of a bowl eligible Mountain West team not getting an invite to a bowl.
