The first spring scrimmage for the Wyoming Cowboys was all about the defense. Which is what you would expect when the top quarterback and wide receiver are both not active. Using a unique scoring system the defense won easily 72-41. The win by the defense was highlighted by four interceptions, four sacks, eight tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.
Marqueston Huff, Darrenn White, Korey Jones and Kenny Browder all had an interception. White had the longest return of the day which was 25 yards off a Josh Smith pass. Kurt Taufa'asua was a beast at defensive tackle. He finished with nine tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Ben Durbin and Todd Knight also picked up sacks. Durbin finished with five tackles, four of which were for a loss. MLB JJ Quinlan has had a nice spring and finished with six tackles. Read more about Quinlan and the obstacles he has faced to get to this point. This was really the first chance to see the Chris Tormey defense in action and it passed the eye test. Tormey rolled out multiple formations including a 4-3, 3-4 and 3-3-5.
The offense got off to a slow start but things picked up at the end. Colby Kirkegaard is still working to master the offense and grew more confident as the scrimmage progressed. He finished the day completing 25 of 50 passes for 299 yards. He threw three touchdowns including a 64 yard score to Spencer Bruce but was picked off three times.
Josh Smith was the only other QB to play and he finished 2 of 9 for seven yards and one interception.
Robert Herron had the best day of the receivers, he led the team with seven catches for 97 yards. Spencer Bruce had four catches for 90 yards including his 64 yard score. James Caraway seems to be catching on after his conversion from cornerback. Caraway finished with four catches for 46 yards. Eric Nzeocha had two catches for 17 yards and a touchdown.
The running game was not effective for the Pokes who had just 65 total yards on the ground. Tedder Easton led the team with 10 carries for 45 yards. Brandon Miller had five rushes for 13 yards while Kody Sutton carried the ball four times for -11 yards. The offensive line needs some work in finding some starters, still several players trying to grab a starting spot. JC transfer Connor Rains has spent most of his time working with the second unit so far.
On special teams there was certainly some nice work done. Aussie punter Tim Gleeson showed a strong leg and averaged 51.3 yards on four punts, his longest was 58 yards. The kicking game went pretty well overall. Stuart Williams was perfect on five extra points and made field goals of 33, 35, 36 and 37 yards. Daniel Sullivan has a hard strong leg this spring but missed one extra point and a field goal from 35 yards.
