On Monday the Cowboys released their updated depth chart with fall camp completed. There had been plenty of battles we were watching and now have the answers to most of those questions. The depth chart is only two deep, so we don't know how everything played out. We may still see some players not listed on the depth chart play this weekend.
Injuries were also a concern and some players will not be available week one. MLB Oliver Schober and S Chad Reese will both miss the opener. Had been waiting so long to have Schober back after missing last year. Also sophomore safety B.J. Hendrix is out for the year with an injury. He can redshirt and will stay have three years of eligbility remaining.
Here is our breakdown of the depth chart:
Obviously Brett Smith is the starter. Colby Kirkegaard is listed as the backup but there is a large OR next to his name. So Jason Thompson could also be used. I would still expect Kirkegaard to get the first call off the bench.
The starting four all stayed the same, wasn't sure Trey Norman would maintain his starting spot but he did. The first four backups are: Justin Berger, Keenan Montgomery, Jalen Claiborne and Spencer Bruce. Clairborne had the best spring of this group, followed by Montgomery who came on strong towards the end. We haven't talked about Berger yet this camp. He is a 6-2 205lb sophomore who transferred from Diablo CC in California. Spencer Bruce provides a nice big target for Smith. We'll see if the Cowboys use Nico Brown at all in the opener. He and Josh Smith both had nice camps and thought they were both in play for one of the backup spots.
The biggest surpise for the linmen is that redshirt freshmen Jake Jones beat out senior Zach Rushing for the starting spot at right guard. True freshmen Chase Rouiller is the first backup behind Taylor Strong at left guard. Rafe Kiely passed Travis Bogard and Skyler Hinton for the backup center position. Kyle Magnuson kept his starting spot at right tackle.
Everything stayed the same at the two tackle positions. Miraldo Michel was able to maintain his starting spot at left end, Eddie Yarborough stays as the backup. Justin Bernthaler is now the #2 RE behind Sonny Puletasi,
Everything stayed the same at both OLB positions. With the injury to Schober, we now have Devyn Harris listed as the starter at MLB. True freshmen Siaosi Hala'api'api is currently second at that spot. Will be interesting to see if they used Hala'api'api in the opener and burn his redshirt right away.
Interesting to find that the nickelback position was eliminated from this depth chart. With Reese injured we now see Luke Anderson moved to the #2 spot at strong safety. Everything stayed the same at both corner spots and free safety.
