The Wyoming Cowboys boarded a plane Sunday and headed to the Great White North. The Pokes will spend the week in Calgary taking in the sights and playing ball. Originally there had been four games scheduled but the University of Albert bailed. Monday will be a fun day where the team will get settled in and check out the town.
The remaining schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday - VS Calgary Dinos - 6pm
- Wednesday - VS Mount Royal Cougars - 7pm
- Thursday - Recreation Day
- Friday - VS Calgary Dinos 8:15pm
I'm still impressed that The University of Calgary named their mascot the Dinos. In the comments name your favorite dinosaur. Mine is the Anklyosaurus, big fan of the clubbed tail.
The only other US college participating in the tournament is Montana State. Wyoming played in this same tournament in 2006 under Steve McClain going 2-0.Some positive news is that Leonard Washington did make the trip with the team. He isn't expected to play but he has been practicing with the team. This is a very positive step as Washington has been doing all the right things to get back on the team. The only player who didn't make the trip was transfer Charles Hankerson Jr. who wouldn't be able to play due to transfer rules.
This tournament is really coming at the perfect time. With so many freshmen and transfers the team will finally have a chance to play as a team and start to develop some chemistry. They are also going to have a chance to bond and get a bit of a vacation before school starts. There are plenty of questions about the Cowboy program right now with so many changes and new faces. Hopefully we'll come away with a better idea of where this team is at and who can contribute. The great thing is that if any major weaknesses are found, they can be addressed over the next two and a half months before the season starts.
Obviously there is plenty of focus on the football team with fall camp starting up. It will be nice to have a solid week of basketball updates as well. It will be a very busy week here on Cowboy Altitude. The University setup a Storify page to help make it easier for fans to check out tweets and updates from the team and players in Calgary. Make sure to check it out over the week.
