Practice #1: Fleischman Out

UPDATED: 7:45PM MST

One practice finished and we already have two men down. After practice started Wyoming let the media know that sophomore right tackle Daniel Fleischman was injured last week and has left the team. The injury is non-football related and certainly makes you wonder what happened. After spring practice Fleischman was listed as the starter at right tackle.

The offensive line was already some what of a question mark after losing two starters from 2011. Now the group takes another hit. There is some experience at right tackle and senior Kyle Magnuson is the likely replacement. He has played in 13 games including three starts. This may be another chance for junior college transfer Connor Rains to make an impact. Rains enrolled in January but wasn't able to grab the starting position and actually fell to third on the depth chart.

After practice there was more bad news.

Sullivan suffered a stroke last month but was expected to be ready for the season opener. It is certainly scary when someone so young suffers something so serious like a stroke. Obviously his long term health is more important then playing football this season. Hopefully they can get everything figured out and Sullivan can return in 2013. Wish him all the best!

Stuart Williams is the likely candidate to take over for Sullivan. In 2011 Williams went 6-6 on extra points. Perhaps walk-on Taylor King from Natrona County can work his way into the mix.

Certainly hope the news of injuries and players lost for the year slows down dramatically.

Reader LaxWyo let me know that senior WR James Caraway graduated and is no longer on the team. Apparently his wife is in the military and since he had graduated she could now be stationed elsewhere. So he needed to be with his family, which I certainly understand. Caraway had a nice spring after making the switch from defensive back. I checked the roster and he is no longer listed.

Robert Gagliardi also had some other reports on what he saw from freshmen in the first practice.

  • Shaun Wick and D.J. May both did a nice job of running the ball and catching passes.
  • Uso Olive is very thick and looks like a great run stopper and will do a nice job inside.
  • Jason Thompson has a very strong arm.
  • The group of freshmen wide receivers all did a nice job. He said a couple weren't listed on the roster, one of those is probably Jake Maulhardt. Wonder who the other could be.

One thing I've noticed is that the players are on a twitter restriction for at least the month of August. We'll see if this blackout lasts all season. I certainly enjoy following players on twitter to see how they are doing and just to get to know their personalities. This may just be a nice way to keep everyone out of trouble, concentrate on football and make sure no none says anything stupid online during camp.
