There is some roster shakeup for the Cowboys this week. With injuries and some sub par play it is time to to get some fresh faces out there.
The biggest question mark right now is Brett Smith. His status will be determined later in the week. Right now Colby Kirkegaard and Jason Thompson are listed as the backup. Whoever has the better week of practice will get the start if Smith isn't any able to play? Would hate to see Thompson burn his redshirt for just one game, would also hate for Wyoming to lose to Cal Poly.
Gregg Brandon may end up using both Thompson and Kirkegaard.
Brandon said there's even a chance Kirkegaard and Thompson both play against Cal-Poly.
"We’ve got to win this game," Brandon said. "And that’s the bottom line. I’m gonna play the best guy. If it’s Colby, it’s Colby. If it’s Jason, it’s Jason. If it’s both of them, it’s both of them."
Another injury occurred against Toledo and flew under the radar a bit.
DT Kurt Taufa'asua had his wrist bent a really awkward angle and the thought it was broken. X-rays were negative and he is expected back for the Idaho game. Originally he was projected to be out for the entire year. Certainly great news that he won't be out long. Patrick Mertens will start this week in his place. Uso Olive is the backup behind Merterns and there is a chance he could play. He could provide a boost to stopping the run game.
Devyn Harris was not as lucky with his injury news. Harris will miss the remainder of the season and has been wearing a walking boot for much of the year. This week Oliver Schober and Siaosi Hala'api'api are listed as co-starters at MLB. Schober hasn't played yet this season.
Ghaali Muhammad is now the starter at SAM linebacker ahead of Zack Berg. Ghaali had eight tackles last week against Toledo. Berg made plenty of plays in the spring and fall camps. Haven't heard anything since the season started.
Safety Chad Reese will play this week. He missed the opener after recovering from a minor surgery. Then he needed to go home last week due to a death in the family. Reese is a very aggressive player and he should add some more physical play in the secondary. Mark Nzeocha missed the second half against Toledo, he is doubtful to play this weekend.
At running back Shaun Wick is the #1 back followed by Brandon Miller and D.J. May. Interesting how that was moved was decided. May led the team in rushing yards (64) and yards per carry(8). Wick averaged 6.8 yards on his four carries, he also had a costly fumble on a reception. Miller ran eight times for 32 yards.
In wide receiver news Jalen Claiborne has passed Trey Norman on the depth chart and will now start. Besides his one drop, Norman has a strong start. The top five receivers have all be performed very well at time time this year. Robert Herron had a shin issue that kept him out against Toledo, he'll be ready to go this weekend.
