2013 Wyoming Cowboys Spring Game -From a Dad's & Fan Point of View

By Brand LeMaitre

Right off, let me say that I am a passionate Poke fan and complete newbie at football knowledge. I barely know all the positions and can only recognize basic formations, so I will go with what I could see and if that answered my questions I had about the Pokes.

First off, it was Meet the Pokes Kids Event 11:30am-12:30pm. What a perfect day. Not too warm and not too windy...
Honestly, didn't know what to expect and I thought at best they would have a couple of footballs and only a couple of players would be out to meet with the kids. I was completely wrong. I would say that nearly EVERY PLAYER was out on the field and set up in groups by unit and had a position specific drill ready to go with equipment for the kids. I brought my 5 year old son and he had a fantastic time! The players were really nice, cheering on the kids and all were having fun. There were a TON of kids and parents. Wow, I can't say enough about these Pokes, I was really impressed with their character, everyone was involved.

To top it off, the Players were made available for autographs. I had brought a pen and pad of paper (to write notes for this post) and only had that for my son to get autographs, Lame Dad struck again! But then out of nowhere, I looked over and my boy had a 2013 Pokes FB Poster and he was getting autographs on it! I asked my son where he got the Poster and he said the nice football player gave it to him!

Finally, I will just mention that I got to talking with some of the players while my son was getting autographs and high-fives. I asked "You guys gonna get it done this year?", and the response was a military-style "Yes Sir" response. One player, (withholding his name) said that last year was extremely tough with the close losses. You could sense how hungry these Pokes are... they want to win and go to a bowl game in 2013 and I'll bet nothing less will do for these guys...

My Spring game questions

1. Can the Defense put pressure on the quarterback? Answer: I liked what I saw, the Defense generally got to the QB and would have had 3-4 sacks in a game situation. Thompson ripped off a 50 yard run, but you could see that the Defensive players held up because they were not actually going to tackle the guy... but this is where the Spring game is not quite realistic.

2. Has the Defense improved itself on the Missed tackle syndrome? Again I liked what I saw in the first half, those guys were trying more to wrap up verses arm tackling. However, missed tackles showed up in the third quarter. I would estimate that the coaches will point to this and say that is why the conditioning is so important. More on that later.

3. Will the Pokes stop the run? Again, not too bad when the Gold team executed a run play as run plays up the middle were limited to a couple of yards. Definite improvement and you can tell that we've got better, BIGGER guys on the D-line. However, there is a question of depth and not all players were playing at the spring game. DC mentioned that everyone will be ready for the Fall camp.

4. Why do the Cornerbacks begin the play 10 yards off the opponent? Honestly, I don't understand this philosophy and is one of my pet peeves because the Pokes have gotten beat so many times at the Cornerback position. Today they didn't disappoint my frustration. Smith threw to Claiborne for 53 yard play by beating the Luke Kellum, but I will give Luke credit, he was beat, yet he didn't give up and stopped Clairborne on the 2 yard line. Marqueston Huff made a beautiful interception by getting inside the receiver for a TD. Despite a couple of nice plays, the Cornerbacks will need to be a bit faster if they continue to play so far off their receiver assignments... This is an area of concern (at least to me).

5. Does the Offense really have depth at receiver? Without a doubt, YES! Clairborne, Herron, Rufran, Nzeocha, Norman, Sewell all saw passess thrown to them. We are well stocked and we have some fit and fast receivers.

6. Do the Pokes have a backup QB? After last year, especially after the Toledo game where Brett Smith got a concussion, this is a Poke fan worry. Jason Thompson is a gamer, has a good arm and he looks to be fit and more poised than his trial by fire last year at Air Force. I liked what I saw in Thompson. My brother (who lives in Laramie) observed that Thompson is an awesome fit to be the mock Nebraska QB- Martinez to prepare the Defense when the Pokes visit Lincoln August 31st. Colby Kirkegaard had a slow start today with 2 interceptions, but I had to hand it to him that he played better throughout the game and made better decisions with the football. Colby (I thought) got a lot of the blame for the Cal Poly loss last year, but honestly he did enough to win that game.

7. Does the Offense have a running game? Not really sure. D.J. May, Miller, Tedder Easton, Stover, Wick... are all in the lineup for sure next season. But not many running plays. The only thing I noticed was a couple of good efforts by May to continue fighting for yards, and Tedder is one of those "fall foward and get 3-4 yard guys". That ability may come in handy. The one nagging thing I've noticed with the Cowboys is that the spread offense has the running backs next to the QB in the shotgun position (no surprise there), but a running play must be fast and quick. I still believe this aspect must improve. The running plays develop too slow. I would expect this to be an area of emphasis and would it kill DC to have the QB line up under center then hand off the ball to the running back? Think Toledo last year... inside the 5 yard line and settled for field goals because we couldn't punch it in with a running back in the shotgun formation...

8. Side Note: Is their truth to the "It is hard to Recruit to Laramie" issue? My son drank two bottles of water in the first half and we had to find a restroom quick, three times! So I got to see the weight room and we went over to the IPF. I was floored at how nice the facilities are... this was first rate! I honestly think it is up to the players and coaches to provide the atmosphere to the visiting recruit. From my view (and maybe I'm just getting older), a recruit is not deciding on UW because of the facilities, the school and the education UW can provide. That said, I would question is the university doing all it can to promote the school? Don't get me started on the TV situation either... Yes Laramie can be tough to bear in the Winter, but so what? If I was a recruit and I wanted to play football, then UW should and can make quite an impression on me. The TV situation is all apart of that problem. I've heard rumblings that a MWC streaming service will be set up and this is great for the fans and streaming is the future. Sign me up I am ready to pay, but there should be no way that CSU gets five games televised and the Pokes 0. What can we do as a fan base to help?

Summary: The Offense led by Brett Smith and an awesome receiver corps will continue to give us fans some exciting football to watch. Today the Offense was a well oiled machine and it showed in the end with Gold winning over White 92-60. But there has been improvement in the Defense. Speed and tempo has improved overall, lots of plays executed. This means that the decision for the play has been made, go get your assignment done, then get off the field. This not only means a more well conditioned player but also smarter play and more concentration by each individual player. They have to know their assignments. It occurred to me that the reason DC has put the pressure on speed and tempo is that, now that we have some depth on both Offense and Defense, the Pokes will be able to play to what should be the Cowboys strength - being well conditioned at 7220ft! If the Offense and Defense can play at a higher tempo than their opponents, those one or two plays that meant the difference last year (i.e. close losses) should translate into more wins in 2013. These guys are hungry and I can't wait for Fall, should be fun!

Thanks to all the Players today for making such a great memory for my son and I! Time to get a couple of frames for the pictures of my son at the spring game with Sonny Puletasi and Brett Smith and the FB Poster with all the great autographs! Matt H. -Thank you for the encouragement and posting my pics! Go Pokes!

Wyoming 2013 NFL Draft Prospects

Wow. When I started this blog 3 weeks ago I knew it was going to be a task trying to get all the information I need to run it regularly. Its fair to say its probably the wrong time to start a blog of this nature, with the Basketball season over and the Football season still so far away. Although there are some scrimmages to read about. Even through these dead months of April and May I've decided that its still worth adding to the blog and seeing what sort of stuff I can get out.

I must admit most of my time these past few weeks has been taken up by looking at the upcoming NFL draft and seeing what my team (the Chiefs) are likely to do in each round. I've taken part in a few mock drafts. One over on the NFLUK forum (http://forum.nfluk.com/showthread.php?t=96019) Here I was picking for the Chiefs. Each team had a different person representing them and it was a full 7 rounds. The link contains the picks for all. I also took part in my first ever podcast that is produced over here. In this I had 5 teams to draft for (Kansas City, Arizona, St Louis, Carolina and Denver) and there were 6 of us altogether taking it in turns to pick. The podcast can be found to download at http://v2journal.com/19/post/2013/04/live-mock-draft-press-coverage-on-v2-podcast-special.html although I must admit the sound quality is quite poor and I have realized that I need to slow down when I speak on things like this in the future.

Anyway, that's it for my shameless plug. Back on topic I have this week started to talk to Jeremy Mauss of Mountain West Connection. He's shown an interest in the blog and I'm also trying to get him to start a similar project to mine covering the English Soccer league. I want to thank Jeremy for supporting me. I hope to get an interview for the blog from him in the near future.

As I say, the NFL draft in just around the corner, and although it is unlikely that the Pokes are going to have anyone drafted I've decided to look at those that are draft eligible and see how they project at having a chance at the next level.

The player with the best chance at hearing his name called at Radio City Hall is probably Mike Purcell at Defensive Tackle. Purcell was selected in the 1st team All-Mountain West Conference in 2012. It was the first timein his career at Wyoming that he was chosen. NFL draft scout tells us ''He ended the season with 83 total tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one pass breakup and one blocked kick from his defensive tackle position. Purcell was amazingly consistent throughout the season, recording five or more tackles in 11 of 12 games. His season high tackle game in conference play came against New Mexico, with 11 tackles.'' He is being projected as a 7th round pick in most places and is ranked at #21 out of all the Defensive Tackle prospects.

Another player with a chance is Nick Carlson at Center. I actually chose Carlson myself in the mock draft I took part in on twitter for the Texans. I took him in the 7th round there and there is a slight possibility he could go there this weekend. Carlson was 1 of 4 captains for the Pokes in 2012 and he is ranked as the 17th best center in the draft. With Carlson at center the Pokes offense allowed the fewest turnovers in the whole Mountain West.

At Free Safety Luke Anderson is also ranked as the 17th best player at his position. Anderson has been training down in Texas prior to the draft and has drawn rave reviews from onlookers. He ran a 4.24 40 at the regional combine in Houston and teams are said to be interested in him because of his cover skills as well as his speed.

The other 4 players entering the draft are Korey Diede-Jones at OLB, Chris McNeill at Wide Receiver, Luke Ruff at Strong Safety and Kyle Magnuson at Offensive tackle. Its probable that each won't be drafted come the weekend but there is every chance they get a chance at a mini camp as an undrafted free agent. You never know where you may catch on and there is still a chance for each to turn pro given the right circumstances.

Next time I am going to look at the spring scrimmages so far and see if they have taught us anything about the upcoming season. I'm hoping that I'm able to update the blog at least once a week going forward and I'm sure it will get easier as the season approaches and the practices hot up.

In another bit of news I have emailed the Media Relations Department at Wyoming Athletics and I'm hoping with a bit of luck I'll be able to get some player interviews for the blog. Something a bit different so I and the readers can both get to learn a little about our players and how they see the season turning out as we move forward. Fingers crossed for that one! Thanks for reading and please keep with it. I know its pretty slim pickings right now but in the coming months there will be much more to talk about.

If you don't already, follow me on twitter @MCGooding so I can get to know you all and you can help me get up to speed with everything Pokes.

Introducing my Fanposts & Interview with Matt Hargleroad

Hi there and welcome to my new blog regarding everything Wyoming Cowboys. Let me start by explaining a little about me and how this blog is going to develop over the next few years.

I'm Michael Gooding, 25 years old from Cardiff, Wales in the United Kingdom. I first became involved with US sports through the NFL around 6 years ago. After 5 years of remaining a neutral, at the start of the 2012 season I decided to take the plunge and choose a team. I ended up choosing the Chiefs, mostly because of their small following over on NFL UK (forum.nfluk.com) compared to teams like the Patriots, Eagles and Dolphins.

From this I started to become more and more involved with the sport and started to develop a love for the NBA, MLB and college football and basketball. I decided it was now time to choose a college team to follow. There was a thread over on the NFLUK forum with a list of everyones college teams. Looking through the list I seen that there was no one following the Wyoming Cowboys and so decided to find out about them. The more I read, the more I decided that they were the team for me. A small school located pretty much in the middle of nowhere that get next to no media coverage. This was the team for me.

From here, I emailed Matt Hargleroad who runs Cowboy Altitude over on sbnation who gave me more information and pointed me in the right direction in terms of websites to check out and twitter handles to follow. I then had the idea of mapping my journey, from knowing next to nothing about the pokes program, to garnering more and more information and knowledge. I thought this blog would be a good idea, hopefully gaining followers and giving US fans an idea of how their sports and teams are viewed from across the pond. In time I hope to be able to contribute more to Cowboy Altitude and start to express my own opinions about everything Wyoming Cowboys. Thanks to Matt I will also be writing my blog posts as fanposts over on his site.

What better way to start this new blog than to have a Q&A with Matt himself. Done via email I hope you all enjoy it.

Knowing that Matt is not a Wyoming native himself, the first thing I was intrigued by was his own reasons for following the Pokes. In his own words..

''I grew up outside Chicago and followed all the Chicago based sports teams. Baseball was my first love and I really didn't pay that much attention to college sports when I was young. As I got older my interest in college football grew as well''

Matts had a passion for the Nebraska Cornhuskers instilled in him through his dad and also went to a couple of Northwestern football games growing up. He was a track and cross country field runner in high school and went on to attend a division 3 school in Illinois where he shared a quad with some teammates from the track team.

''One of my roommates had a playstation 2 and a copy of NCAA Football 2003 with Joey Harrington on the cover. The game featured 200 fight songs, 144 schools and 23 rivalry game trophies. We were bored one afternoon and decided to create a dynasty league in NCAA Football with all four of us''

The 4 of them decided that they would obey one rule. That they could only pick a one of two star prestige team. His teammates chose Rutgers, Air Force and Northern Illinois.

''I was last to pick and went through the entire list of schools till I came to Wyoming. They only had one prestige and also had some unique school colors. I always love an underdog and they seemed like a perfect team. I remember being terrible when I first started and winning my first game on a late field goal. Eventually I got better and after a few seasons built Wyoming into a powerhouse that won a National Championship''

In 2005 Matt moved a couple of hours north of Seattle.

''I do enjoy the Seattle teams but they will always be second to Chicago''. He also goes to a lot of Seattle Sounder MLS games at CenturyLink Field.

I asked Matt about getting Wyoming news and what his thoughts on overseas fans were.

''I don't really know much about overseas supporters. You are the only twitter follower I have that lives in the UK. It seems the NFL and NBA are popular overseas but not as much with college sports.

The internet makes being an out of state Wyoming fan much easier. The Cowboys don't get much national coverage so you mainly have to rely on the Casper and Cheyenne based newspapers for coverage. I'm able to see almost every Wyoming game that is televised. If a home basketball game wasn't televised then the university will stream it online through their website. You have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to watch those games.''

So what was it that started cowboy altitude?

''I first started a free blog on blogger.com that covered Wyoming. Then I contacted Jeremy Mauss at Mountain West Connection who was already a part of SB Nation. I wrote about Wyoming for his site for awhile and then when SB Nation wanted to add a few more blogs they brough Cowboy Altitude over.

I've spoken with members of the Athletic Department and I am on their mailing list for news releases. I even had a chance to interview Coach Christensen over the phone. I was able to get a press pass to cover the border war last year. It gave me the opportunity to go on the field at War Memorial.''

This really inspired me. This is pretty much the kind of thing I want to achieve with this blog. Something that can start off small and hopefully gain a lot more readers over time. Something that can help me learn more about the pokes.

Living out of state, I wonder if Matt manages to get to many games each season.

''I make it a goal to see a Wyoming football game in person at least once a year. Last year I saw one road game and one home game. My brother lives in colorado so it is easy to visit him and see the Cowboys at the same time. My first game at War Memorial was in 2007 and Wyoming beat TCU. I've only been to one basketball game at Arena-Auditorium.''

Having just got into the college game and having followed the pokes for even less time, I knew the mens basketball team were unlikely to make the NCAA tournament this year but wondered how the basketball and football teams would fare going forward.

''I don't think the basketball team will make the NCAA tournament next year but they will still be competitive. I do expect them to contend for the Mountain West title in 2014 and make the NCAA tournament because they will have so many seniors. I will miss watching Leonard Washington play. He can make your jaw drop with plays on both sides of the court.

The football team could easily improve after a down year. There were several close losses that could have gone in the Cowboys favor. The key to improvement though is the defense that has gone downhill the last two years. If Wyoming can outscore their opponents it will be a step in the right direction. Brett Smith is an incredible playmaker and he will continue to rewrite the record book''

High praise indeed. I'm really looking forward to learning more and more about the program and can't wait for the football season to get under way.

I want to thank Matt for his time in responding to my emails and giving me such in depth answers to my questions. You've made this blog possible and thank you for your continued input.

The New Dome of Doom

Hey Guys, I'm a transient from the several Wyoming boards and noticed a movement going on to get the AA rocking again and wanted to spread the word. If we as fans do what we can to intimidate the opponents and really make some noise, we can influence the games more than you know. Making the AA into the Dome of Doom reborn could be just what the Pokes need to push them into the top 25. Whether we win or lose on the 2nd to SMU, we need the Dome to be rocking for the BSU conference kick-off. Since I cant be at the game I wanted to do my part to compile these ideas into one post that can be used for distribution by the students to get the ball rolling.

Here's how we Turn the AA into The Dome of Doom:

The Student Section will now be known as the Wild Bunch. It will be headed by a group of students in the front rows who will be dressed every game in Cowboy Western garb. A White Board can be employed to start cheers. The cheers may include but are not limited to the following:

**The Foundation Cheers for anytime during the game.**

Weird Pattern

First off I like DC as our head coach I think he has done great things for this program with visibility for one, recruiting at a higher level, and of course going to the two bowl games. It just blows my mind how this pattern has seemingly formed of having a successful year followed by a year where everything seems to fall apart. In my mind it seems like bringing in great kids having a system set up as far as the routine with lifting, meetings, practices all that stuff that we could have some sort of consistency. Is this somehow a coaching problem or what cause honestly it is a bit frustrating.

Insulting

Watching AF football between Yankee innings - Just posted this on Wyoming football blog - It is insulting that Wyoming football has Service Honor and Commitment on their jerseys tonight. Really? Service, honor and commitment to what? Insulting. Wyoming football is not in the league of Academy football. Wyoming football owes an apology to AF Football.

You tried to play a head game and it backfired on you. Wyoming football did not earn the right to have those names on their jerseys.

Detailed game-by-game 2012 UW football predictions

BUMPED TO FRONT PAGE

Wyoming came off a surprise season in 2011. The Cowboys were picked to finish 6th in the Mountain West, but ended up 8-5 (5-2) to finish 3rd in the conference behind ranked Boise State and TCU. Here, I will list my predictions for the 2012 season. Keep in mind these are simply predictions from the eyes of a fan with a closet full of Brown and Gold. My attempt to be realistic are somewhat biased on teams’ momentum from last season, so who knows what could happen… I’m no sports expert and if every prediction came true there would be no reason to play the game, but this is what makes sports fun!

September 1st @ Texas Longhorns: Texas 41, Wyoming 17

The final game of a three game slate against the “mighty” Longhorns, Wyoming fans shouldn’t expect a win in this one, but I expect them to remain competitive and not get totally blown out of the water. Coming away from this game with no injuries and some confidence is a must for the Cowboys' remainder of the season. The teams are playing under different circumstances than the last two meetings. I expect Wyoming to keep close until the second half, when Texas’s overall physicality on defense will take over. However, Wyoming should be able to beat the spread with some big plays as long as they keep a lid on Texas’ inconsistent offense and are not afraid to be aggressive offensively.

September 8th Toledo Rockets: Toledo 28, Wyoming 24

A game that could definitely go either way, but Wyoming just might slip this one up late, though they have been dominant in games decided by less than a touchdown recently. While in recent years they’ve had some grinders in home openers, Toledo might be one the more underrated teams around. Toledo was explosive on offense last year, nearly beat Ohio State, and finished 9-4 including a shootout win over Air Force in the post season. This is a team that could run away with the game if Wyoming’s thinned out defense over looks them. The crowd at the War will need to come out in full force to keep them off balance and Wyoming’s defense ready.

September 15th Cal-Poly Mustangs: Wyoming 45, Cal-Poly 14

Wyoming’s only FCS scheduled opponent at home should be a cakewalk for the Cowboys. However, they need to exploit a weak defense to put points up because Cal-Poly was competitive in the Big West and moves up the Big Sky this year, and Wyoming has had a recent history of barely edging out FCS teams from the Big Sky. Wyoming should win big at home, though.

September 27th @ Idaho Vandals: Wyoming 37, Idaho 7

Not to discredit Idaho, but they really should move to the FCS. They have consistently struggled in one of the weaker conferences in college football. However, this is a team that has nothing to lose and could put up a competitive fight, especially if Wyoming gets off to a sloppy start. I expect the Cowboys to keep this game out of reach.

October 6th @ Nevada Wolfpack: Nevada 28, Wyoming 17

This one could honestly go either way. While Nevada finished 7-6 (5-2) in the WAC and Wyoming finished 8-5 (5-2) in the MWC, Nevada’s 2011 very tough preseason schedule drug the win column down. I think it will be close, and a Wyoming win is certainly not out of reach, but Nevada’s offense at home might be a little too much for the Cowboys at the game’s end, especially since the early bye-week may hurt some early season momentum.

October 13th Air Force Falcons: Wyoming 17, Air force 10

The War should be rocking due to the importance of this conference game. The Academy's running attack has taken a blow recently, and if Wyoming stays balanced and doesn’t try to force anything, they should pull this one out in a close one. Defense is will be a deciding factor in who wins this game.

October 20th @ Fresno State Bulldogs: Wyoming 24, Fresno State 10

I had a hard time predicting this one, but I think Fresno State will have too tough of a time containing Wyoming’s offensive attack, which must be quick starting and composed on the road. This one could also swing either way but look for a Poke win here.

October 27th Boise State Broncos: Boise State 31, Wyoming 14

A one point hiccup to an impressive TCU team kept Boise State out of the BCS mix last season, and Chris Petersen seems to lock and reload every season. While I think Wyoming will keep this one respectable and may turn a few heads, I don’t think a win here is likely. Remember though, a mediocre 2006 UW squad only lost to a BSU team 17-10 that went on to win the Fiesta Bowl. Hopefully this late season matchup can generate a sellout on national TV.

November 3rd Colorado State Rams: Wyoming 27, Colorado State 14

Rivalry games can always go one way or another despite a difference in teams’ records, but Wyoming at home versus a rebuilding CSU team that has struggled in recent years seems to be too much, espcially losing in 2010 to a 3-9 Wyoming team 0-44. Look for a CSU team hungry for the boot to key in on some defensive mistakes and hang closer, though.

November 10th @ New Mexico Lobos: Wyoming 21, New Mexico 7

I don’t think struggling New Mexico is much of a threat to a rising Wyoming team, but under the helm of Bob Davie this one could be closer than one might think. The Lobos are just too inconsistent to have much of a chance of an upset here, however.

November 17th @ UNLV Rebels: Wyoming 35, UNLV 14

While UNLV does get a home field advantage and "new helmets", I think they’ll only hang around with the Cowboys for a while before Brett Smith lights up the board in the passing game. The Rebels will score a few times late to keep it closer than it really was, and settle to the bottom of the Mountain West.

November 24th San Diego State Aztecs: Wyoming 28, San Diego State 21

While Wyoming’s win on the road was somewhat of a fluke last season, SDSU is losing most of its offensive weapons. Wyoming will be playing its season finale at home and being late in the year, I see weather being the primary factor against a much offensively-weakened team from southern California.

Predicted Wyoming Record: 8-4 (6-2), 3rd in the Mountain West Conference, New Mexico or Poinsettia Bowl Invite (if Boise State lands in a BCS game).

Tyler Cox - Cowboy Tough : Wyoming Wrestler Competes With World Class Grapplers

Tyler Cox is a sophomore Cowboy wrestler who has competed for the Olympics and knows what it takes to ascend to the top! He began his journey in Gillette, Wyoming where his parents placed him into a program and his skills have grown from there. He says that he learned to set his goals high and to work as hard as he can to get there and it has certainly paid off. Tyler currently is listed in many wrestling resource sites and in all he is in the top twenty wrestlers nationally. This comes even though he did not wrestle for the Pokes this year.

Tyler took what is called a redshirt Year for Olympic competition. The NCAA allows him to not lose a year of competition and allows him to compete in a whole different arena. The competition is tremendous and training is tough. It requires self-discipline and concentration, where he would start running at 6am most days and then onto lifting with his coach and trainer Ethan Kyle for a large part of the day. Later on he would work out with the team and work on Qualifying for trials which eventually qualified him for the Olympic trials in Iowa.

Later on he would work out with the team and work on Qualifying for trials which eventually qualified him for the Olympic trials in Iowa.

At the Olympic Trials there were competitors that have competed all around the world and in past Olympics and World competition. Tyler said the fans in Iowa filled the arena and that it made him proud to show up as a Cowboy and represent the state of Wyoming in the sport. The rules are played according to Olympic code and it is different then the college rules. At this competition were other Wyoming wrestlers and our own Coach Pendleton trying to make the National Team. This is a tremendous achievement for those who wrestle for the Pokes.

When asked how his progress has influenced wrestling in the state overall, Tyler is quite humble and compliments those who have been in his life as well as having a strong faithful background. His list not only includes his parents and coaches, but others who have pushed him such as Mike Johnson (former coach) who actually took a private plane to the Olympic trials to see Tyler wrestle and John Poloncic who inspired him along the way. He also has said that while wrestling in the state of Wyoming, he noticed how the level of competition each year progressively got stronger. He still won 4 state titles during the increase in level of competition.

Tyler was heavily recruited by nationally renowned programs from the beginning. Schools such as Minnesota, Oklahoma and Stanford wanted him on their team, but he chose Wyoming. He says that is because he believed in what Wyoming Coach Mark Branch was teaching and he wanted to be a part of it. During his time at Wyoming coach Branch pushed hard for the site in Laramie to become a Regional training center for Olympic wrestlers. It's official name is the Wyoming Regional Training Center. Branch has brought the Wyoming program into the spotlight nationally. He has the program competing and winning against teams in the top ten and with wrestlers such as Tyler Cox the program will continue to ascend towards the top. With a top twenty program doing this well and with the level of competition in Wyoming high school wrestling getting much better, its only a matter of time that Branch will be seeking more wrestlers from within the state. This is a testament to wrestling programs throughout the state and club wrestling as well.

According to statistics provided to me by the University, there has been an increase in the the level of interest in the program and attendance at the meets. In the last three years season ticket sales have increased over 60% and single game sales increased about 20%. Attending a "dual" as they are called is fun and when you attend an event you will see Wyoming wrestling against some of the best teams in the country. Coach Branch has brought in teams that compete for national championships each year and the Wyoming Open features some of the best competition in the United States and has had Olympic National wrestlers in the compete as well. Come see this sport in Laramie, support the Olympic sports and programs and the affordable price for tickets allows one to take the whole family. It would be nice to see all the competition in the Arena-Auditorium and the University would appreciate it as well.

Go Pokes!

He goes to a community college I don't know for sure which one. He is a Australian, they have definitely proven they can play at the D-1 level. You can check youtube and there is a pretty good highlight reel of him, he is a good shooter and can take people off the dribble fairly well. Might be a liability on the defensive end didn't show the ability to shut down quick guards.

Video: Santa Monica's Dylan Muscat talks about why he picked Wyoming on National Signing Day

Santa Monica High's Dylan Muscat talked with the Los Angeles Sports Journal's Ed Gonzalez and Wayne Neal about the reasons he picked Wyoming to continue his football career.

The three-year starter was named on ESPNLA's 2nd-Team All South Bay/Long Beach team and picked as one the the top ten defensive back by the LA Times. That hard work helped lead the Vikings to its first Ocean League title in 10 years as they advance to the CIF-SS Western Division Semifinals were they lost to rival Culver City.

Among the schools that he considered were Penn, Harvard, and Cal Poly.

Has Wyo already used all of the basketball scholarships this year?

I was just wondering if Wyoming has signed everyone they can this year. I noticed on ESPN two players out of the three from the state of Wyoming that weren't signed yet, and if Wyo had any scholarships left. The players are Nikko Johnson a two star shooting guard and Taylor Millay a one star power forward. If players from Wyo can fill a need iv always thought it puts out a good image about the program.

If players from Wyo can fill a need iv always thought it puts out a good image about the program.

Wyo loses another one

Its the same old story again. First Wyoming lose Richard Winston a defensive end/outside linebacker, and last week they lose Christian Chamagua. Lets start with Winston he was a huge get for Coach C and his staff he would of brought a lot of athleticism to the defense I projected him to play outside linebacker specialty rusher on the line. Wyoming's linebacking core does not look that promising this next year Nzeacha has not shown he can play at this level of competition. Jones is a strong side linebacker not middle Knight showed some flashes when replacing Hendricks, and Anderson is undersized against the run but was solid in coverage. Winston could of really solidified that position this year. Fortunately they are recruiting a couple more linebackers in this class. Next the lose of Chamagua isn't huge because of the two big junior college commits who will both step in and start right away.

Wyoming Recruiting: Trent Sewell, WR From Washington, Commits To Cowboys

According to Scout.com, Trent Sewell, a 3 star WR from Bothell, WA, has verbally committed to play football for Dave Christensen and the Wyoming Cowboys.

With his commitment, Sewell leaps atop the Cowboy's list of best recruits in 2012. By rankings, Sewell is the 2nd best WR in the state of WA. In my opinion, however, Sewell is the best overall WR in the state. This is a huge recruiting coup for the University of Wyoming.

For those wondering, "Who the heck is this guy?", allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kyle Rancourt, and I'm an editor over at the Washington State Cougar blog, CougCenter. Part of my job at CougCenter is to handle all things recruiting related. We have a Recruiting Central hub that I'm pretty proud of, and I've been linked to by ESPN, Yahoo!, SI, EDSBS, and CBS Sports. I say these things not to brag (ok, to brag a little), but mainly to prove I'm not just some schmuck who doesn't know what he's talking about.

I talked to Matt, expressed my jealously of Sewell choosing Wyoming, and now I'm here to tell you why I like the kid so much.

According to Scout.com, Trent Sewell, a 3 star WR from Bothell, WA, has verbally committed to play football for Dave Christensen and the Wyoming Cowboys.

With his commitment, Sewell leaps atop the Cowboy's list of best recruits in 2012.
I talked to Matt, expressed my jealously of Sewell choosing Wyoming, and now I'm here to tell you why I like the kid so much.

At 6'2, and 205 pounds, Sewell is a nice sized receiver. He is a former track guy, and reportedly ran a 40 somewhere in the 4.5 range. While speed isn't necessarily his strong suit, it's not an issue, either. He possesses a quick first step, and has the ability to win a foot race or two.

The thing I like most about Sewell is his frame. He can easily add another 10-15 pounds without sacrificing much speed in the process. While his routes aren't as crisp as they could be, he's an ideal slot receiver. He goes over the middle with no fear, and conjures up memories of a young Anquan Boldin.

Now, please don't take that comparison as "he thinks Sewell is going to be Anquan Boldin!", because that's not the case. He's a physical receiver, and that's the first comparison that comes to mind.

There are good things, but I'd be doing everyone a disservice if I did not mention the negatives, as well. Earlier I said he was the best WR in the state. I stick by that. However, it's a bit misleading. Compared to years past, when Washington produced guys like Kasen Williams, this year's class is simply not that great. There are good players, but no one is jaw dropping or oozing in talent.

Sewell needs to tighten up his routes, as he has a tendency to round them off, rather than make sharp cuts. A big reason Sewell didn't have more offers was a fairly large drop in production from his junior year to his senior campaign. As a junior, he racked up over 1,000 yards receiving, while only totaling just over 500 this year. He was double teamed a lot more, so he needs to learn how to make things happen when the defense focuses on him more.

Overall, I'm still really impressed with the kid. I don't know if he'll ever be a true #1 WR that opposing defenses game plan around, but it's no secret that I've been lobbying to sign this kid since this past April. He had an offer, and former Cougar HC Paul Wulff told him essentially, "Take the offer now, or it's revoked." That was in August. Sewell passed, hoping to play out his senior year and turn it into more more lucrative offers. Another possibility was he simply wasn't ready to commit to one school. I was against Wulff making this move from Day 1, and have loudly campaigned for new coach Mike Leach to give Sewell an offer. Before that could happen, however, Christensen brought Sewell in for a visit. The rest is history.

I'm almost always in favor of redshirting kids, but I think Sewell has the ability to play right away. I tip my cap to Coach Christensen for recruiting an area he knows well, and grabbing a guy who I would have loved to have in Pullman.

There are plenty of nice empty seats in the AA

I know I ranted about football attendance.

Now on to basketball.

I love Wyoming, I love UW, I love the Cowboys, I love everything from Ragtime Cowboy Joe to the Bronze Boot to the beer song to you name it. So this isn't trying to belittle our fans.. but I have a hard time understanding why (collectively speaking) we demand a good football team, yet when we get one we can barely fill half the stadium. Now that the athletic department has brought back "legendary" Larry Shyatt and our men's team is 8-1 (when is the last time that happened?) our Arena Auditorium looks and feels a lot like a consolation game at state basketball in Casper.

The AA is the third largest basketball venue in the Mountain West with nearly 16,000 seats, most of which are eerily empty during games nowadays. It is early in the season, and I can't say we've played any big shot teams yet, but if we want to look ahead to a conference title and maybe, just maybe going to the Big Tournament, we need to be filling seats. The largest announced attendance for a game thus far was in the 4,500's... that's roughly two thirds of the AA completely empty. During an average game, it is not uncommon for the upper deck to be completely empty. Student sections are mediocre at best but aside from the band, the most intimidating noises to an opponent are squeaky shoes on the court.

I have seen and heard about the teams of the previous Shyatt period in the late 90's when the place would sell out. It was a tough place to play and we won there. And we got to watch them win. Now when our games are televised it is an embarrassment for Wyoming. If you look at the Spectrum at Utah State or even New Mexico, you are looking at what college basketball fan bases should truly be about (and that's not even getting into the likes of Duke, Kansas, Indiana, etc...)

It seems like there is a bit of a kink in advertising games. Here on campus the only way I even know if there is a game is to look at the schedule, wheras everyone just seems to know when and were a football game is. Perhaps the powers that be should try to get the news out there.

So please, my fellow Wyoming fans, I can understand if our athletics are dismal you'll be less likely to show up (sad but just a fact of life), but when we are actually winning, you need to be doing a better job of not making our university look like it be on Division 2 status.

Thank you.

Boise State - Wyoming blog bet

Greetings Wyomingers (Wyomingians? Wyomites?) ... As part of our question-and-answer agreement prior to the Boise State - Wyoming game and as an extension of the goodwill and warm fuzzies between our two blogs, Cowboy Altitude and OBNUG entered into a friendly wager on the outcome of last Saturday's game. Here I am to collect.

***

Inspired by a true movie story.

***

Location: The Missouri Tigers football offices.

Year: 2008

Scene: Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen is cleaning up his desk after the Tigers' Alamo Bowl win over Northwestern. His LG Chocolate phone rings with Missy Elliott's "Milkshake" as his ringtone. Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman is on the other end.

Christensen: You got the Dave man. Go.

Burman: Mr. Christensen, this is Tom Burman from the University of Wyoming. We are prepared to offer you the head coach position for the Cowboys.

Christensen: But why me? I've never been a head coach before. I don't know the first thing about recruiting Wyoming. Chase Daniel called me a nub not two days ago. Are you sure you have the right guy?

Burman: Mr. Christensen, you are a great head coach with a special purpose. Your powers are greater than even you know.

Christensen: Powers? What kind of powers?

Burman: Look inside yourself Dave Christensen. Embrace the power from within.

Christensen closes his eyes. The room darkens. A window flies open, sending papers into the air. Christensen bends a filing cabinet into a bowtie with his mind and draws up a formation with a center, two quarterbacks, and eight tight ends.

Christensen: Incredible.

Burman: You report to Laramie first thing in the morning.

Burman hangs up. Christense shotguns a Red Bull and mindmelds the can into a Christmas ornament in the shape of Gary Pinkel.

***

Location: Laramie, Wyoming

Year: 2009

Scene: Christensen takes inventory of his new team.

Christensen: Attention, men. My name is Dave Christensen. I will be your head coach and leader starting now. You will respect me because I can control metal with my mind and come up with offenses that are borderline illegal. On a related note, you will find in your locker a 500-page playbook stapled together with parts from a Ford Focus.

Now, introductions.

Austyn Carta-Samuels: My name is Austyn Carta-Samuels. My power is invisibility, including but not limited to big games. I would say my weakness is that I want to be like Jeremiah Masoli.

Brian Hendricks: My name is Brian Hendricks. I can run through brick walls and tackle anything that moves - except hamsters.

Joe Glenn enters.

Glenn: Joe Glenn. Bionic middle finger.

Joe Glenn leaves.

Tashaun Gipson: My name is Tashaun Gipson. I have stretchy arms and oven mitts for hands.

Christensen: I can work with this. The world is mine!

Wyoming goes 6-6 and wins the New Mexico Bowl.

***

Location: Laramie, Wyoming.

Year: 2010

Scene: Boise State plays at Wyoming.

Christensen: An enemy approaches.

Chris Petersen: Hey there. My name is Chris Petersen. I don't think we've met.

Intense staring contest.

Christensen picks up a set of bleachers with his mind and throws them at Petersen.

Petersen responds by reading Christensen's inner most thoughts and bringing up Christensen's embarrassing childhood shortcomings. Petersen engulfs Christensen in a ball of energy. Austin Pettis does the Dougie around the ball. Austyn Carta-Samuels disappears. Boise State wins 51-6.

***

Location: Boise, Idaho.

Year: 2011

Scene: Wyoming visits Bronco Stadium with second place in the Mountain West on the line. Christensen seeks revenge on his enemy.

Christensen: We meet again, Dr. Xavier Chris Petersen.

Petersen: It's just Chris Petersen.

Christensen: Whatever. I know I wasn't strategically or emotionally appeared for our last battle and I let my poor planning carry over into a 3-9 season that I had to work very hard to justify to my employers, but I promise you things will be different this time. For one, I've replaced that Carta-Samuels kid with a new and improved model.

Brett Smith enters.

Smith: My name is Brett Smith. I have golden arms and golden legs and golden peach fuzz. Don't touch me or I'll fumble.

Christensen: And you remember Brian Hendricks and Tashaun Gipson.

Hendricks and Gipson enter.

Petersen: I brought some friends with me, too. B-men team, assemble.

The B-men enter.

Kellen Moore: My name is Kellen Moore, and I can see the future, walk on water, peel an orange in one contiguous piece, speak to animals, and kill at Pictionary. I have no weaknesses, except loving too much.

Tyrone Crawford: Tyrone Crawford. I have retractable claws and am the man at eight-pin bowling.

Ian Johnson enters.

Johnson: Ian Johnson. Proposals and beanies.

Ian Johnson leaves.

Matt Miller: My name is Matt Miller, and I am human glue. Also, I am incapable of emotion, like Data from Star Trek.

Doug Martin: My name is Doug Martin, and I have muscles on top of muscles.

OBNUG: My name is OBNUG, and I own the Walk to Remember soundtrack. I am allergic to gluten.

Petersen: I don't know who you are.

OBNUG: I have a blog?

Petersen: Yeah, still nothing.

Christensen: Enough with the pleasantries. Let's do this. For the future of mankind! And that Mountain West thing!

The two sides lock into a fierce battle. Martin and Hendricks fight back and forth while OBNUG tries to get everyone's autograph. When Brett Smith isn't looking, Tyrone Crawford touches him and he fumbles. Tashaun Gipson knocks Matt Miller to the ground. Kellen Moore throws a vial of Super Mario Bros invincibility stars high into the air toward Miller. Gipson goes to catch it, but it bounces off his oven mitt hands and right into Matt Miller's lap. The battle turns. OBNUG has found the tee-retrieving dog and is getting nose grundles. Petersen and the B-Men go in for the final blow. Boise State wins 36-14.

The University of Kansas offers Christensen a job.

Christensen: I'll see you in an Insight Bowl, Dr. Petersen. This isn't over!

End scene.
