The University of Wyoming reported a secondary recruiting violation that occurred this week according to the Casper Star Tribune.
UW Senior Associate Athletics Director Josh Rebholz, who is in charge of development/revenue enhancement for the Cowboy Joe Club, posted the following to his Twitter account (@cowboyjoeclub) on Wednesday afternoon:
"Check out Zach Ewan on @ESPN right now in the #UnderArmour All-Star Game, he's committed to #Wyoming! Only @TheMWC commitment in the game."
It is a violation of NCAA rules for an Coach of staff member of a University to mention a recruit by name until they have officially signed with the school. Wyoming was prompt about reporting the infraction to the Mountain West. No tattoos or award sales were involved in this tweet.
"We've confirmed that it was a secondary recruiting violation," Associate Athletics Director Tim Harkins said. "We've self-reported it to the Mountain West Conference. That's all we can do."
The tweet has been taken down so you won't find it any longer. In case you were curious about how Ewan played in the Under Armour HS All-American game I can tell you I saw him once. I watched a replay on ESPNU and they didn't show every play. I did witness Ewan execute a perfect snap to the punter and then rush down field where he downed the punt after the returner backed off. Pretty good impression from that small body of evidence. Ewan played for the Red team which won 23-21.
Other Wyoming recruiting news and tidbits after the jump.
No recruits visiting Laramie this weekend since the coaching is attending a conference. There are several athletes lined up for the rest of January. Here are three that I know of so far.
LB/DE Eddie Yarbroughshould be visiting in the next two weeks. He could fill the defensive linemen position the Pokes are still trying to fill.
K Daniel Sullivan from Washington State will be visiting on January 14th. He has quite the leg and his recruiting is starting to pick up from other schools. If the University of Washington offers him he will most likely accept that offer, otherwise he'll probably be a Cowboy in the Fall.
Another Texas recruit could be coming to Wyoming. Kevin Robertson is rated three stars by Rivals and will visit Laramie on the 1/21/11. At 6-4 208lbs he has nice size and would be the tallest receiver in the recruiting class. The only other school to offer Robertson is North Texas whom he will visit on 1/28/11. Robertson attends a small private school which may be why an athlete with his size and ratings has been recruited very heavily.
The Pokes still sit at 21 commits and are looking for just four more to complete their class. National signing day is February 2nd.
