Just after I published our Panel of Pokes in which three panelists pick Lekan Ajay to be the biggest contributor to the team, he is no longer on the team. The school made the announcement via email just a few minutes ago.
Laramie, Wyo. (Nov. 2, 2011) -- University of Wyoming head basketball coach Larry Shyatt announced on Wednesday that freshman forward Lekan Ajayi is no longer a member of the Wyoming Basketball team.
"Lekan (Ajayi) is no longer a part of our basketball team," said Shyatt. "We feel that it is important for Lekan, personally, to finish out this semester academically, and he is planning to complete this semester at the University of Wyoming. We wish him all the best in his future."
Ajayi signed a national letter of intent with Wyoming this past April. A native of Lagos, Nigeria, he played his prep basketball at Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Shyatt said he would have no further comment.
This leaves a big hole for Wyoming behind senior center Adam Waddell. Because now there are no other centers listed on the roster.
This may open the door for freshmen forward Tyrone Marshall to see some playing time this year now. It appeared that Marshall was going to redshirt this year. Wyoming has Matt Sellers from Western Wyoming CC in school now but he was preparing to redshirt this year and then play in 2012.
Rough to lose a player before the season even starts. Ajayi was the highest rated recruit of the 2011 class and was a big steal for the program. Hopefully he does finish up this semester at Wyoming and can have success down the road.
