Preview: Cowboys host #9 San Diego State in home finale

Well we really are getting down to it here Cowboy fans.  Wyoming will suit up for one final time in Laramie until November.  This will be your last chance to see the lone senior Djibril Thiam suit up as a Cowboy in Wyoming.  The bad news for Wyoming fans is that the Pokes are hosting #9 San Diego State who is 27-2 and just came off a loss against BYU.

History repeats itself here as the first time these two teams met up it was after BYU handed San Diego State it's first loss of the year.  After that loss the Aztecs were angry and took out on Wyoming in a 96-57 blowout.  That 39 point margin of victory was worst loss by the Pokes this year and second most lopsided victory for the Aztecs.  Despite the loss the Aztecs still have a shot at winning the MWC Tournament and will most likely end up as a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

I have to make one comment about the picture posted.  I'm a big fan of mascots myself and actually spent years working in Minor League Baseball as a mascot.  Despite me posting the Aztec mascot who is a visible person in a costume I don't endorse those types of mascots.  Even if your mascot is a human it is still better to get a full mascot costume like Wyoming does with Pistol Pete.

With a Top 10 team coming to town and it being the final home game will a big crowd show up at the AA?  With the struggles of the basketball team the crowds have been fairly thin throughout the year.  Attendance hasn't exceeded 6,000 this year.  Even when Jimmer mania came to town only a little over 5,000 fans showed up.  One reason for that could have been the fact that it was -27 degrees outside which kept more than a few fans at home.

The Aztecs bring an impressive level of talent and athleticism and Steve Fisher puts it all together.  Kawhi Leonard is still putting averaging a double/double with his 15/10 effort.  He nearly put up a double double in the first half of the BYU game.  DJ Gay is one of the most efficient ball handlers in the Mountain West.  Malcolm Thomas is tough to defend inside the paint.

The Pokes have played well under Fred Langley and sit at 2-3 during his tenure.  This will be the toughest test the Pokes have faced since the coaching change was made.  Amath M'Baye has been averaging 21 points a game under Langley but how will he do when facing the best of the aggressive defense of the Aztecs?  There is no doubt that this will be an entertaining game.  The big question is can Wyoming keep the score close?

If the Pokes can keep the final score within 10 then that is something that most teams have no accomplished.  The main thing is to not have a repeat of the blowout back in January.  No way that should happen on your home court.  I'm sure Langley will have the team pumped as usual and they will be ready to play.
