Wyoming Spring Football is back in gear

To take our minds off the mind numbing process of hiring a new basketball coach let's talk some football.  With Spring Break happening last week all the players and coaches were off at home or enjoying a warmer climate.  So there was nothing to report last week.  Well everyone is back in Laramie and the team practiced on Monday.

The first news is that RB Ghaali Muhammad is out the rest of the spring after suffering an undisclosed injury a couple weeks ago.  Surgery is set to take place this Friday but he should be ready for the Fall.  Muhammad just made the move to RB after spending last year at LB and doing a soild job there.

The Depth Chart for Spring ball is also available and worth checking out.  Muhammad was listed as the third string RB behind Alvester Alexander and Brandon Miller.  Miller just moved to RB from WR this year.  The biggest surprise on the depth at RB is that Nehemie Kankolongo is listed as 5th behind walk on Vincent Bobbitt .  Last Spring he was the #1 RB but he got in Coach Christensen's doghouse last Fall and played sparingly after a one game suspension.

On the QB race Emory Miller starts of as #1 right now followed by Brett Smith.  The two current starters at the safety spots are Luke Ruff and Kenny Browder.  RS Freshman Travis Bogard is listed as the starter at right guard.

Details on the first scrimmage after the jump.

The weather was decent two weeks ago so the players worked outside and did some live plays. Here are some highlights from those plays. It's not surprising that defense is so far ahead of the offense right now.  With the lack of experience at QB and shallow depth on the offensive line. Good to see that Kongo had a big run.

Thursday's practice saw players run through several sessions on agility and fundamentals before moving to seven-on-seven drills, the Oklahoma drill and concluding with a 40-minute session of live plays. The Cowboy defense dominated the final session by holding the UW offense to only a handful of plays over 10 yards and just one touchdown. Senior defensive end Josh Biezuns had several big hits, including a tackle for loss, while redshirt freshman defensive end Riley Lange and sophomore linebacker Devyn Harris chipped in tackles for loss of their own. Sophomore cornerback Marqueston Huff recovered a fumble that was caused by a hit from senior linebacker Brian Hendricks and sophomore cornerback Andrew Meredith and junior strong safety Luke Ruff broke up passes. The Cowboy offense was highlighted by a 32-yard rush from sophomore running back Nehemie Kankolongo and topped off with a 25-yard touchdown toss from redshirt freshman quarterback Emory Miller Jr. to redshirt freshman tight end Shane Sullivan.

The first full scrimmage will actually take place this Saturday.  Here is the list of Spring practice dates.
