What should have been a joyous time for family of Wyoming swimmer David Schmitt has turned to tragedy. He was set to graduate today but officials found his body at War Memorial Stadium this morning. Workers located his body trapped in a narrow portion of the lower level of the stadium when they arrived at 6:45am.
According to police it appears that Schmitt was attempting to climb the stadium last night. All the gates to the stadium are locked in the evening and police were unsure how Schmitt gained access to the stadium.
"We are shocked and saddened to learn of David's death," UW President Tom Buchanan says. "The death of a student is always tragic, but it is even more difficult to comprehend on a day when the university is celebrating a new beginning for our graduating students. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."
The Casper native was a geology major and captain on the swim team for the Cowboys. Truly an awful story to report at any time, it is even worse that he was on the verge of beginning a whole new chapter in his life. Thoughts and prayers go to out the Schmitt family and the coaches and teammates that will miss him dearly.
