The Wyoming Cowboys lost some depth at receiver with Green River native Drew Martinez leaving Laramie. Instead he will be enrolling at Western Wyoming JC where he will play basketball for coach Trace Bevell according to the Green River Star.
Martinez, who was a scholarship football player for the University of Wyoming headed into his red-shirt freshman year, left the program a few weeks ago due to an injury to his shoulder and for personal reasons.
DREW MARTINEZ contacted coach Bevell in early May about possibly playing basketball at WWCC. Bevell also added the Western would be glad to give him that opportunity.
A three-year varsity player and two-year starter for the Green River Wolves, Martinez twice earned all-conference honors and earned all-state honors his junior year in high school. Martinez averaged just under 13 points per game in his high school career and scored 826 total points which is good for seventh in Green River High School history.
Martinez was part of the 2010 recruiting class and used his redshirt his first year. He showed some positives this spring and had a shot at seeing the field this year.
I had been curious if Martinez was still enrolled at Laramie. He was listed on the Cowboy depth chart after spring practice was completed but was missing from the roster for at least a month. Not sure what type of injury he suffered and how severe it was since the coaches don't comment on player injuries. Perhaps it would have affected his football career or he simply wasn't happy at UW.
Never good to lose a player but it could open up a spot for the talented crop of receivers that are enrolling this fall. Wish Drew the best at Western Wyoming and hope he does well there.
