Wyoming Holds On 28-27 Over Bowling Green

The Cardiac Cowboys are back!  Wyoming has already equaled their win total from 2010 and memories of the close wins from 2009 come flooding back.  After giving up a 28-14 lead in less then five minutes the defensive line stepped up to save the victory.  Defensive ends Josh Biezuns and Gabe Knapton teamed up to block the extra point and give Wyoming it's first road win of the year and first 3-0 start since 1996.

This game featured big momentum shifts, key plays and a mix of sloppy play on both sides.  Bowling Green had their usual potent offense show up as they totaled 514 yards of offense including 437 passing yards by QB Matt Schilz.  A combined six turnovers buried the Falcons offense.  The biggest surprise for Wyoming was the big play by true freshmen CB Blair Burns who had two key interceptions and fumble recovery.  Burns is the third corner on the team and mostly see action in dime and nickel coverage.

The offense wasn't able to go with their usual heavy ground attack and finished with 129 yards total on the ground.  Ghaali Muhammad finished with a 38 yards, Alvester Alexander had 37 and Brett Smith finished with 36.  Muhammad and Alexander both scored touchdowns.  Brandon Miller was not very effective running ball with just 10 yards but did catch a big 40 yard pass on a wheel route.

Smith was 25 of 39 for 266 yards and one touchdown pass.  He did have one fumble on a designed run but overall he managed the offense efficiently.  A total of ten different players caught passes today and senior Mazi Ogbonna had his biggest game of the season and it all came in the second half.  His six catches for 78 yards to lead the team and helped fuel some key drives.

Wyoming is now 3-0 under Dave Christensen when playing in the Eastern time zone and 2-0 against MAC teams.  This was a big win for the Pokes who aiming for a return to a bowl game.  The prevent defense at the end of the game allowed Bowling Green to rack up some big yardage and nearly force overtime.  The main thing is that Wyoming got the victory and now head home to Laramie.  Next week we'll see a meeting of undefeated teams when the Cornhuskers make their way to War Memorial for the first time ever.

This win was a combination of luck and being in the right place at the right time.  I'll take the win and the 3-0 start any day.
