Mountain West Conference Standings

(updated 9.24.2011 at 11:58 PM PDT)

Conf Overall
TCU Horned Frogs 1 0 3 1
Colorado St. Rams 1 0 3 1
Boise St. Broncos 0 0 3 0
Wyoming Cowboys 0 0 3 1
San Diego St. Aztecs 0 0 3 1
UNLV Rebels 0 0 1 3
Air Force Falcons 0 1 2 1
New Mexico Lobos 0 1 0 4

Well that was probably the worst weekend ever in the history of Mountain West football.  Overall the league went 4-4 with two losses to FCS programs.  Plus an off the field incident that was the final straw in one coaches crappy career.  The good news here is that things can only go up from here for the Mountain West.

Air Force:  The win over Tennessee State was so lopsided that Air Force was able to get their backup and third string quarterbacks some playing time.  The Falcons tallied 792 yards of offense during their 63-24 rvictory.  You know you're offense is rolling when you only have to punt once the entire game.

Boise State:  Kellen Moore is awful.  This "Heisman hopeful" only completed 79% if his passes, threw for less then 300 yards and only three touchdowns.  He better start doubling those numbers if he wants to surpass Andrew Luck.  More kicking woes this week with a missed extra point.  Just tap it in now, just tap it in.  Next week the Broncos will look to avenge themselves from last years lone defeat when Nevada makes it's way to town.

Colorado State:  The Rams were able to transform two overtimes and just 232 yards of offense into a 35-34 victory over Utah State.   The defense recovered four fumbles which made up for the abysmal performance by the offense.  Wyoming fans are hoping the Aggies are that generous with turnovers in two weeks.  With San Jose State coming next week to  Fort Collins the Rams are looking at 4-1 start to the year.

New Mexico:  After two lawsuits and only two wins in three plus years the University of New Mexico finally had enough of Mike Locksley.  Was it the loss to FCS Sam Houston State at home or the underage "recruit" who was arrested for a DUI while driving a vehicle registered to Locksley?  Honestly either one should have done to the trick.  If the Lobos want to get this program back on their feet then they better do everything in their power to hire Mike Leach.

San Diego State:  All that was needed to make the Michigan defense look good was for San Diego State to make a trip to Ann Arbor.  The Aztecs ruined their shot at knocking off Brady Hoke and improving to 4-0.  Ronnie Hillman was held to just 109 yards in the 28-7 loss.  For most running backs breaking a 100 yards is a solid day but not for a studlike Hillman.

TCU:  This was your typical power program beat down of a FCS school.  The Horned Frogs were down 3-0 in the first quarter and then scored 41 unanswered points to help crush Portland State.  The initials for Portland State is POST.   I find that humourous for some reason.  Next week is the battle for the Iron skillet with that other three initial religous school SMU.

UNLV:  So a week after destroying Hawaii the Rebels get pounded by FCS Southern Utah 41-16.  How the hell does that happen?  I'm sure this is exactly the type of performance the University was hoping for after giving Coach Hauck an extension after a 2-11 year.  The Rebels only allowed 256 yards but they also gave  tupwo pick sixes.  The scary thing is that  this means Southern Utah would have beaten Hawaii by 45 points if they played on the mainland.

Wyoming:  Well the national title hopes are likely lost for the Cowboys but they have still have shot at winning the Mountain West.  Just need to win all seven conference games and they have it locked up.  Meanwhile the Pokes will enjoy their first bye week since October 24, 2009.  That is a really long time to play football without a break.

Future Mountain West Team Capsules

Fresno State:  Fresno State beat up on Idaho to even their record at 2-2.

Hawaii:  Bryant Moniz is a stud.  That is all.

Nevada:  The Wolpack now have more losses (2) then they did all of last year.
