Say "Hello" to basketball season Poke fans. Larry Shyatt and his crew have officially started the season.

To celebrate Halloween the Cowboys traveled to Ethete, Wyoming to take on Fort Lewis College at Wyoming Indian High School. This was the first of two exhibition games for the Pokes this year. The second takes place on Saturday at the AA. The game was part of the N7 initiative started by Nike and took place on the Wind River Reservation. Seemed like a very special event and I would have loved to witness it in person. Great to see the Pokes help put on a great event for that community. Here is a pic of the gym if interested, looks very nice.

This game was very close in the first half. Fort Lewis came out hitting most of their shots and held the lead for most of the first half. At halftime Wyoming held a 36-31 lead which was certainly closer then expected over a D2 school. In the second half the Pokes went on a 17-0 run to break things wide open. Larry Nance. Jr really got things going in the second as he caught fire. Nance led all scorers with 21 points and 16 of those came in the second half. He also added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Freshmen guard Josh Adams opened up some eyes with his 12 point debut. He showed plenty of flash and athleticism with a nice dunk and also an alley-oop slam in the game. Luke Martinez was not feeling well but still finished with 11 points and hit three shots from downtown. Jason McManamen had a fine debut with 11 points and he was perfect from long range with three triples. Derek Cooke was the fifth Cowboy to score in double figures. Cooke finished with 10 points and a game best nine rebounds.

As a team Wyoming shot 51.8% from the field (29 of 56), 40% on 3 pointers (9 of 22) and 60% (15 of 25) on free throws. The only figure that is worrisome is the free throw percentage. Hopefully that is just some early season jitters that can be worked out.

Leonard Washington dressed for this game but stayed on the bench the entire time. One report said that it was part of his suspension from last spring while another said it was a coaches decision. Either way Washington didn't play tonight and he wont play in the second exhibition either. I wouldn't be concerned unless he misses any regular season games.

Welcome back Cowboy Hoops!. It's been a long time.
