Wyoming Releases 2012-13 Hoops Schedule

New, 10 comments

Wyoming continued it's tradition of being the last school in the Mountain West to release it's men's basketball schedule. Maybe they really feel that the schedule has to released in alphabetical order and the Cowboys need to take that last spot.

Fans who were hoping for a challenging non-conference schedule will certainly be disappointed. Besides the Front Range rivalry games with Colorado and Denver there isn't much appeal for Poke fans. There should be some decent road games with Illinois State and the Larry Brown coached SMU.

The exhibition game against Fort Lewis that is being played in Ethete, WY on the Wind River Reservation is great community event. The Pokes first game at the AA is against the D3 Wooster Fighting Scots, which is the alma mater for Coach Shyatt and Duncan.

Shyatt thinks this schedule is a good fit for Cowboys:

"This schedule will be a great challenge for our young team this season," Shyatt said. "The non-conference schedule has a good balance against quality opponents, which will help us prepare for yet another challenging Mountain West conference schedule. Our fans will have plenty of chances to pack the AA again, and that's what we need. We need our fans to get that building rocking again."

We've got the schedule and RPI rankings posted after the jump.

Here is the 2011 RPI for the 2012-13 non-conference schedule:

Wooster - D3

Western State - D2

Southern - 286

South Dakota - 288

North Carolina Central - 239

Northern Colorado - 256

CSU Bakersfield - 224

UC Santa Barbara - 128

Colorado - 52

Illinois State - 98

Oklahoma Panhandle State - D2

Denver - 93

UC Santa Barbara -128

SMU - 211

I'd never heard of Oklahoma Panhandle State before. Western State has a tremendous cross country program. Hoops? Not so much. At least there aren't any teams with a 300+ RPI.

A big complaint against Coach Schroyer was the creampuff schedules he put together, well that and the losing. I get that this may be a rebuilding year for the Pokes after losing six seniors. Still I think this team can handle a bigger challenge and was expecting a bit more then what we have here.

One thing I learned from watching Coach Miles at CSU is that you have to schedule big non-conference games, winning is not necessary. The Rams did a great job at losing to Stanford and Kansas. If the Cowboys put together another 20 win season and end up in another pay to play tournament in March this schedule will be the reason.

Here is the entire 2012-13 schedule.

Is this what you expected?

Are you sad? happy? overjoyed? melancholly?
