Running Game Explodes In First Full Scrimmage

After slow start the offense ends up shining during chilly scrimmage.

At first the defense dominated the first full scrimmage of the spring. On the first four series they held the offense in check and didn't even allow a first down conversion till the fourth possession. However once the offense started clicking nothing could stop them. The run game had a tremendous day in a surprising surge.

On 58 rushing attempts the offense gained 335 yards for a 5.7 yard average and scored five touchdowns. Leading the attack was Shaun Wick with 146 yards and two touchdowns. He was followed by D.J. May who gained 96 yards and also scored two touchdowns. Omar Stover had a nice debut with 81 yards.

The quarterbacks also had a successful day by throwing for a combined 26-45 for 372 yards. As group they threw four touchdowns and three interceptions. Brett Smith worked with the #1 offense and went 13-21 for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Colby Kirkegaard completed 4-6 passes for 115 yards a touchdown. Jason Thompson completed 7-11 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown but also thew two interceptions.

On the receiving front Dominic Rufran led the way with seven catches for 69 yards. Eric Nzeocha caught four passes for 66 yards. Trey Norman, Justin Berger, Tanner Simpson and J.D. Krill all caught touchdown passes.

Despite the offense eventually putting up big numbers there were a number of fine performances by the defense. LB Lucas Wacha led the way with nine tackles and also had a sack. CB Marqueston Huff, S Jesse Sampson, LB Mark Nzeocha and S Andrew Meredith all had six tackles.

Four sacks were recorded, one each by Wacha, Uso Olive, Devyn Harris and Eddie Yarbrough. Nehemie Kankolongo, Cortland Fort and Sam Hardy all had interceptions.

The kickers were phenomenal by kicking a combined 13/13 fields and 16/17 extra points. Stuart Williams hit all 10 field goal attempts ranging from 20 to 40 yards.

Certainly an interesting scrimmage where both units really shined at times. Great to see the defense completely lock down the offense for an extended period of time and also to see the run game spring to life. The next scrimmage will take place on next Wednesday the 17th.
